John W. Hairston, Milam County Treasurer, announces re election bid in the Democratic Primary on Saturday July 24. He cites experience since 1946 and pledges continued devotion to duty, reporting orderly funds, efficient records, and asking voters for their support.
E M Willie lost his left arm above the elbow in a Sunday morning crash on the Little River causeway east of the city. His car sideswiped Clarence Hanes’s vehicle. Willie’s arm was severed. He was rushed to St Edwards Hospital and is reported doing well.
County Judge Dan Tyson announced a pledge from State Highway Engineer DeWitt C. Greer that Milam County will receive right of way for highways 77 and 36. A June 1 meeting with the Highway Commission and a district survey by John F. Blair will map needed right of way. Estimated rebuild costs run 2 to 3 million dollars with county expense limited to acquiring rights of way.
Rain exceeding two and a half inches up to 11 a.m. and over three inches by 10:30 a.m. drenched Cameron and surrounding areas. Firefighters fought flames at the Milam Theatre and Palace of Sweets early this morning. Frank Richter Jr, a fireman, was struck by a hose and hurled onto a curb near the First National Bank, losing consciousness briefly. eye injury feared but not sight threatening. Six other units helped extinguish the blaze after more than four hours.
Two Cameron High seniors performed well at the state Interscholastic League finals in Austin. T. J. O'Neill won the 220 yard dash and placed third in the 100 yard dash. Laurence Michalka tied for 10 feet in the pole vault, returning as top football backfield stars and regarded among Yoe High's all time great athletes.
Cameron student Elba Jean Colburn finished third for Class A schools in number sense at the state meet in Austin on Saturday. The meet drew about 500 participants in the literary events division, and Yee High School and Cameron take pride in her achievement.

He said Bedell Smith’s Moscow talks aim to clear up Soviet ideas about U S policy and affirmed continued aid to Western Europe and no hostile aims toward Russia. Officials expect any talks to require predefined topics and broader participation and foresee only a series of settlements rather than a single over all agreement.
Fire believed to have started in the Milam Theatre balcony spread to the Palace of Sweets building early Friday. Damage estimated between 60 000 and 75 000 dollars. Firemen fought the blaze over four hours with three trucks and ten hose lines. Fire Chief Ralph Michalka called it one of the department's toughest blazes. Myrtle Hinton of Cameron Hotel alerted authorities after discovering the fire. Smoke was sighted by W. T. Whatley Jr as he arrived from the east.
Harry Haraway's Western Auto Associate Store is now open for business after a Friday blaze that destroyed Milam Theatre and the Palace of Sweets. An explosion shattered plate glass, but Haraway resumed work Saturday morning at the new location in central Texas and invites the public to his bargain-filled grand opening.
