An old-fashioned Democratic rally and picnic is set for June 7 on the East Terrace lawn in Waco. Senator Lloyd Bentsen will speak, with food and music and state and local officials as special guests.
Golf ball sized hail struck northeast Williamson County last Sunday night for about 15 minutes, destroying maize and cotton across a ten mile strip through Jarrell Prairie Dell Salado Bartlett Holland and Schwertner. No human or animal injuries reported aside from a few dead jackrabbits.
Robertson County Sheriff and deputy stopped their unmarked car to pick up two hitch hikers returning from a burglary investigation at a Ridge area store post office. The thieves were captured and burglary charges filed against Lufkin youths. stolen articles recovered.
Gov Dolph Briscoe’s school finance plan would give Cameron Independent School District 1,262,000 in state aid, with Milano and Thorndale also listed for 174,000 and 350,000 respectively. Rep Dan Kubiak called Briscoe’s letters politicking and said Briscoe has lost the battle for his plan.
The Folk Fete will feature four age groups for the first tricycle and bicycle race on Friday in downtown Cameron. Pre-registration by May 15 is required with a 59 cent entry fee and space for only the first 24 registrants.
Choice slaughter calves led gains of one to three dollars as prices neared forty dollars. Receipts totaled 883, up from 774 last week and 553 last year. Slaughter cows and bulls rose two to three dollars, steers and heifers up one dollar, and feeder cattle up one to two dollars. Hog prices climbed with 562 hogs sold. top barrows and gilts reached forty five thirty.
Anthony Nick Anastasiades of Rt. 1 Rosebud faces theft over 50 dollars, possession of marijuana, and DWI charges after a Sunday 3 to 4 a.m. Barrett's Exxon Service Station robbery in Cameron. About 41 dollars was recovered. charges include a prior DWI. Sheriff Carl Black reported the arrest by Cameron police.
A week of turbulent weather left Milam County residents on edge as winds rain and hail damaged homes and knocked out power. In Cameron lights were out 7:05 to 8:10 p m with 3 800 customers affected and 15 towers down on the Minerva Hearne line. Homes at McClaren Hill and Hearne suffered tornado like damage and a Bell Falls Electric spokesman said the storm caused historic regional damage with crews working around the clock to restore service.
