Milam County farmers report widespread grasshopper infestation due to warm weather and light rains. Early insecticide use shows payoff as hoppers target young cotton and corn leaves. Insecticide purchases rise. bell, falls, and burleson counties also affected. tomato vines progressing toward market amid hopeful early yields.
Cameron officials anticipate strong water revenue boosting prospects with a nine month net of about 23 000 and think annual net water income could reach 30 000 aiding bond payoff. Authors urge prudent use for lasting city gains and call for expanded school facilities as rural districts consolidate.
Milam County hosts a county wide banquet at the Simon George Memorial Hall in Cameron on May 5 in observance of the National Home Demonstration Association Silver Anniversary. About 125 attendees heard Mrs. Fritz Doss review 25 years of Homemaking progress and Extension impact.
The Junior Chamber of Commerce sponsored a Crippled Children Clinic at Milam County Health Unit on April 26. Forty-two Milam County residents were under supervision. eight new applicants joined, seven placed under observation, with follow ups by Health and School Nurses. Falls County reported 13 cases.
Mrs. Mattie Rogers widow of Ben S. Rogers died at the old family home in Independence at 4 30 Monday afternoon April 23 1951. She was sister of Mrs. B F Bailey of Cameron and known in the city. Born in Independence she was daughter of J H and Helen Blue. She married Mr Rogers in 1890 at the Independence Baptist Church. They lived in Brenham where he practiced law until his 1911 death. Afterward she returned to Independence to spend her remaining years. She was a life member of the Independence Baptist Church.
Douglas Obermiller of Cameron won first place in Conference A slide rule division with Edwin Bennett Mission second and Fred Schneider LaMarque third. Everett Freeport took Conference AA top honors and Joe Menn Yorktown led Conference B.
Honor students at the Ada Henderson School have been announced by principal C. L. Canady. The thirteen top ranking students are listed in alphabetical order with no regard to rank. Promotion exercises will be held May 22 from 2 to 3 P M at Yee High School Auditorium. There will be no commencement exercises this year and no valedictorian or salutatorian.
Corporal Donald N. Batte earned the Silver Star for gallantry on the Korean front. The ceremony on a forward landing strip was conducted by Secretary of the Army Frank Pace Jr. He also holds a Purple Heart after three combat wounds and is the adopted son of Miss Mary Belle Batte.
Cameron firemen set a new Central District pumper speed record with an 18.5 second hookup, surpassing the previous 19 second mark during the 39th Semi Annual Central Texas Firemen’s Convention in Hearne on May 6. Twenty Central Texas towns represented. thirty racing teams competed.
Scouts across Milam County are urged to attend a Camporee at Wilson Ledbetter Park on Friday and Saturday May 11 and 12. Rev John C Solomon announces formalities start at 5 P M Friday with events ending at 1 15 P M Saturday. Richard Bush district chairman leads, Harry Hahn of Central Texas attends, and parents are invited to join the Council Fire at 8 15 Friday night.
Yee High School band under Francis Cox swept Region III events at Waco High School on May 5. The Cameron entries claimed first division ratings in Band Concert Playing and Band Sight Reading, with flute and French horn quartets also earning top honors. Baritone soloists Billie Nell Johnson and Billy Weideman received first division ratings.
Excitement rose as drilling resumed on the Mollest Blakey place in Liberty, about 12 miles east of Cameron. The Bird Oil Company of Dallas reports a 5700 foot well with potential to yield 70 to 80 barrels daily, amid long standing Milam County oil prospects.
Miss Pauline Lakewitz visited her parents at Rogers and attended the weddings of Miss Laverne Finney and Floris Lange at Buckholts over the weekend.
OPS announces grading and stamping rules for beef veal lamb and mutton effective May 9 wholesalers must not sell ungraded meat. Retailers will face new ceiling prices starting May 14 with June 3 posted retail prices and two staged reductions October 1 and next fall aimed at saving shoppers. The efforts involve Houston district OPS official Fred C. Hopkins and a list of firemen officers. about twenty five Cameron attendees attended the district convention in Killeen Texas next October.
