Fertilizer Shortage Prompts Substitution Advice
Farmers facing ammonium nitrate shortages are advised to use ammonium sulfate as a nitrogen source. Ammonium sulfate provides 21 percent nitrogen, so 150 pounds match 100 pounds of nitrate. The substitute works well on neutral to slightly alkaline soils, ensuring crop and pasture yields are maintained despite supply issues.
