Former District Attorney Pioneer A S Hearrell Dead

A. S. Hearrell, 57, longtime Milam County district attorney and respected lawyer, died at Cameron Hospital after a recent operation. Born in 1866 in Missouri, he grew up near Rockdale, studied at Baylor, taught school, and became a leading Milam County Bar figure. Funeral services were held at his family home with interment at Oak Hill Cemetery.

Baylor Choral Club to Sing in Cameron This Weekend

The Baylor College Choral Club will perform at You High School Saturday night March 24 and at the Cameron Baptist Church Sunday morning. Tickets sell at Palace of Sweets Jackson Read and New Cameron Drug. Gohmert to Open Variety Store in Cameron

L F Gohmert of Cuero plans a new variety store in the Mondrik building on the west side of Cameron’s square near April 1. The building was rebuilt after last winter’s fire by Frank Mondrik, with a new front and concrete floor. Mrs Gohmert and daughter Dorothy will join after April 1 once a dwelling is found. Cameron residents welcome the DeWitt county family’s arrival.

Highway Report Shows Mixed Open Roads To San Antonio And West Texas

Route to San Antonio via Thorndale and Taylor is open but rough near Thorndale Thrall. A better Cavilla Bartlett path is recommended. West Texas route via Temple Brownwood Amarillo is open and in good shape. Houston route via Hearne Benchley and Courtey Hempstead. A 12 mile stretch between Phoenix and Los Angeles faced fierce storms making travel dangerous and not advised pending investigation.

City Purchases Green Property to Expand Park

The city buys the Green property adjoining the park along the main thoroughfare, adding to the park site. Finance committee members O M Smith Georgie T Graves and H M Hefley negotiated last month. funds come from a ten cent tax. Slaughter pen property will be retired from park tax with a contract to direct the band for one year. City foresees remaining funds cover minor maintenance and boosting park improvements.

Fire destroys large grain and hay barn at Maysfield

A large grain and hay barn owned by BH LL Atkitson at Maysfield burned last Wednesday around dawn. The building was destroyed but partially insured, with the barn reportedly insured for the past 84 years.

City Attorney Rules City Lacks Power to Remove School Board Member

City Attorney Paul Webb issued an opinion that the city cannot remove Dr. John L. Denson from the school board. Removal requires court conviction or quo warranto action in Travis or Milam counties, with removal possible only after such action. Resignation requests are also beyond current legal authority.
