A 1917 letter urges Milam County to adopt a five cent per hundred tax to finance a county library. It argues education as an investment and cites state support for universities and schools, claiming 25 cents could fund widespread access and benefit all residents.
Milam County obtains a standalone district court under a new legislative district created with Gov. Ferguson's signature. Judge John Watson of Cameron II remains, with five annual terms and a continuous docket. The county attorney will handle district court work after the current district attorney’s term ends. Galveston Texas March 19 The crew of the Harrison line steamship Professor tells of a February 9 night when German unrestricted submarine warfare brought torpedo threats and rockets lighting the sea. An explosion near a tanker lit the scene as the torpedo narrowly missed the Professor and radio calls for help flooded in. Survivors from the Atrist had earlier perished from exposure, with nine rescued survivors near death ashore.
This week’s notices list names connected to registrations from Jack Ramseur to Seanna Lewis and Thurman Worcester to Lucile Norman. It also records numerous vehicle registrations in Cameron, Rockdale, Thorndale, and vicinity and a series of land and lot transfers totaling thousands of dollars across Idella Green addition Cameron to Newton Johnson addition Thorndale and other properties in Milam and surrounding counties.
This week recording shows John W. Ford and spouse transferring 50 acres in the Coffield Dunnington subdivision to E. H. Ford for $500, with W. M. Jeter and R. P. Jeter as party to the record.
Deputy Marshal Adams and Night Policeman Cook arrested two young white men after a string of hold ups near the Santa Fe freight depot. They were examined Tuesday, then remanded to jail in default of bail set at 6750 dollars each to await higher court action.
The Yarrellton column notes corn planting is underway but drought persists. Repairs at the gin progress with new machinery and brickwork. Local visits include Cameron and Buckholts. a child injury is reported. Revival services at North Elm attract many. school progress is strong under Ms Thompson Caldwell Thomas. A Yarrellton North Elm basketball game ends 9 to 8 for Yarrellton with good community turnout.
The road bond election for Road District No. 12 carried by 129 votes for bonds and 21 against. It will connect Walkers Creek and Maysfield to Cameron via a fifteen mile solid road from Silver City to Walker's Creek bridge, expanding Cameron's trade area formerly flowing to Calvert. The Herald praises the district's heavy approval and urges the small defeat to reconsider.
The legislature abolished the congressman-at-large seat and redrew districts. Next year voters will elect only one congressman. The Sixth district now includes Navarro, Freestone, Limestone, Robertson, Brazos, Milam, Leon, Madison and Hill counties.
Mrs Krupa from Temple is visiting as a guest of Mrs John Newton. The brief notes her arrival and social visit in town society circles.
Monta Thomas completes purchase of a Buick Six roadster through the firm Krough and Thomas. The deal marks a notable local business transaction with Thomas as the buyer and Krough & Thomas as the purchasing firm.
Milam county resident R. R. Tyson, a respected farmer and citizen, plans a formal sheriff candidacy announcement at the appropriate time after strong urging from friends across the county. Tyson previously ran for sheriff two years ago and was defeated yet remains a popular figure with broad support.
Miss Lucile Norman and Mr. Thurman T Worcester were quietly married Sunday afternoon at the Methodist parsonage with Rev H C Willis officiating. The couple left for San Antonio to spend the week, and friends in Cameron extend congratulations and good wishes.
Capt John A Smith a Branchville farmer and pioneer citizen arrived Saturday for a city visit and appeared hale and hearty during the stop.
