The Texas Legislature faces multiple tax proposals including a Franchise Income Tax, a 3 percent sales tax, and personal and corporate income taxes. Officials warn that without new levies, state revenue will rise sharply through social security related taxes, potentially forcing taxpayers to shoulder heavy tax burdens.
B Slocomb declares plans to run in Cameron city election on April 6. He cites past service on the City Council and as Street Committee chair, crediting road conditions and fiscal stewardship. Friends praise his civic record and courteous conduct toward residents.
Paul J. King a former Milam County resident and 1922 anti Ku Klux platform candidate against O D Baker of Gause died recently at his Port Arthur home. Baker later died in Orange. King was noted as a local political figure and served as Justice of the Peace in Port Arthur.
Hubert T. Johnson superintendent of the Methodist Home in Waco and noted layman will deliver four addresses at Cameron Methodist church starting Sunday March 21 The talks aim to revive church life before Easter with city wide appeal and 7 45 p m song services each evening The Sacrament of the Lord's Supper will be observed Thursday evening and many anticipate his visit.
Funeral services were held for Robert Norman Summers three month old son of Mr and Mrs Bob Summers of Cameron at Sandy Creek Tuesday afternoon with burial in Sandy Creek cemetery. He died suddenly at his grandmother Mrs Jessie Ford’s home in Waco from a heart attack Sunday afternoon.
Texas high school track stars dominated the fifth annual La tion track meet held Saturday March 15. John Reagan of Houston led with 29 points, Mart scored 26, Thomas Jefferson of San Antonio earned 19 1 2 points. High point man Billy Gillam of Mare tallied 13 8 4 points winning the shot put and discus, took second in the pole and 880 yard relay. Gillam also placed second in the javelin, a surprise after winning it at the state meet last year. Pope edged Gillam in the javelin for the top spot.
Mrs. C. C. Seale died at her daughter's home in Crosby on March 11. She was mother to Mrs. John W. Haygood of Cameron. Funeral services were at 10 a.m. with Leland Green Funeral Home in charge, from the Church of Christ, burial in Crosby Cemetery. Surviving daughters are Mrs. Haygood of Cameron, Mrs. Payne, and Mrs. Cook of Crosby.
Representative Jesse James III remains at home in Cameron after three weeks of illness from a flu related attack. He was released from an Austin hospital last week and expects to be away from his House desk for several days as paralysis in his left arm from the illness improves.
Milam County tax collector Bill Alex Bonds urges car and truck owners to register in their county of residence. Prior practice saw registrations filed in adjoining counties, but state law requires local registration. Illegally registered vehicles must be re registered, and Milam County’s registration revenues, up to about 66000 dollars, are at stake.
Nine year old Fontaine Phipps died at his Cameron home at 4 oclock Tuesday. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon with burial in Little River cemetery. He is survived by his father Richard Phipps and several brothers and sisters.
August Horstmann, current alderman, announced he will run to succeed himself in the April general election. He chairs the finance and Fire committees and credits his leadership with the citys strong financial condition. A taxpayer and businessman, he asks friends for support and pledges to justify their faith in his administration.
Four Central Texas schools Taylor Waco Temple and Rockdale bring teams to Cameron for a five event track meet Friday. Cameron also fielding a team. Coach L Wood predicts a fast, interesting meet with some of the region’s best track men competing.
Robbers ransacked the Methodist church and Ada Henderson school on Sunday night. Lockers were broken and papers scattered. cafeteria damage reported. No arrests yet. Officers suspect the burglars sought money.
The American Legion marked the national organization’s eighteenth birthday with a social meeting and barbecue supper. Post Commander A G Kunz introduced Fred Young Department Adjutant of Austin who spoke and showed a highway safety film. Five ten and fifteen year certificates were awarded for consecutive membership.
Mrs W T Smith, 61, died at the family residence in Cameron on March 14 1937 after several months illness. Funeral services were held at 2 pm Monday from the family home with interment in Oak Hill Cemetery. Rev Vernon G Miles conducted the service. Survived by husband W T Smith two sons Frank and Boots two brothers Lee and Walter Harris two sisters Mrs B L Posey and Mrs Ben Nabours all of Cameron.
The city fixed the filing hour at 6 p.m. Saturday March 27 for candidates seeking aldermen seats and school board posts. The council moved to close ballots in time for printing and absentee voting. Six candidates have announced for aldermen and five for trustees. Dr. A. B. Kruse and Mrs. John Ryan are the latest trustee entrants.
The Cameron Herald reports two local citizens have announced for the school board seat vacated by the non reelection of Mrs Giles McDermott and Rush Thomas. Mrs Ryan is a longtime civic leader and former PTA president with broad support for school improvement. Dr Kruse, new to public office, presides over the Agricultural Committee of the Chamber of Commerce and has aided farmers and merchants while active in the American Legion.
Mrs. Mary Agnes Lamkin 85 died Sunday at her son W S Lamkin’s home in Milam County. Born Agnes McDermott in Alabama in 1852 she moved to Texas as a child with her parents, crossing prairie trails to Milam County and settling near Marlow.
Five years ago Geo. Graves of Cameron dug the first trench silo improving dairy feeding. The method stores feed underground reducing exposure to wind rain and fire hazards and touted as economical and efficient for Milam County dairies.
