A remorseful note from Rush A. Thomas to his daughter Viola recalls the death of his black dog Prieto. He laments his own failings and honors the dog’s steadfast loyalty, recounting how the animal guarded him at the door, waited by the fireside, and died tragically after being struck by an automobile.
Red Cross workers in Cameron gather at Cato's Cafe for an inspiration meeting. Chas M Hicks is named city Red Cross director while Lieut Frank M Newton, prisoner in Germany, is cited. Local leaders urge broad support and note Cameron’s quota about double 1943 with over $14,000 needed in the county.
The Navy William Teter Newton SK3c of Cameron becomes the fourth son of Mr. and Mrs. W. O. Newton to enter military service. He left as an assistant National Bank examiner, now at Puget Sound Navy Yard Bremerton with wife Mary Frances Blayrock. Brothers Frank in Navy Seabees and W W O Newton Jr and Sgt Joe Newton in Army also serve, with William starting banking work in Cameron and Wichita Falls.
Lieut. Sam Tyson, missing in action February 15, 1914 over France, is awarded the Air Medal. The 21 year old Cameron native, B 17 bombardier with the Mickey crew based in England, is a Southwestern University 1942 graduate.
The Farm Credit Administration's Emergency Crop Loan Division begins seed loans to farmers with limited collateral in this county. Applications are accepted at the Cameron Chamber of Commerce. Maximum loan is 400 dollars to cover seed, fertilizer, feed, fuel and supplies. Borrowers must not obtain loans from banks. A large home garden and balanced crop program are encouraged.
Rodney Fontaine of Jones Prairie traveled to Cameron on Monday as a casual visitor, according to local society notes.
Staff Sergeant James B. Chamberlain of Dodge City Kansas received the Good Conduct Medal with a red and white ribbon for his year plus of service. He is with the 455th Base Headquarters and Air Base Squadron under Colonel C B Root at the B 26 Marauder pilot school. Young officers train in a nine week course to become first pilots and commanders of the Marauder noted for low combat loss in Europe. Mr and Mrs Ward Hutcherson of Palestine visited their relatives in Temple during the weekend.
Willis Harmon 84 lifelong Cameron resident and son of a slave died March 5 1944. Funeral held March 9 at the colored Baptist Church with Rev P R Hurober and Rev Humber officiating. Interment in Cameron colored cemetery. Survived by children and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. He once worked at the Cameron Herald turning the press and overseeing early steam powered printing.
The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals ordered a new trial for Dr. W. R. Newton of Cameron, reversing his 1942 conviction and seven year sentence for the May 21 1942 attempt on Dr. Roy Hunt of Littlefield. The panel criticized improper testimony about phone calls and alibi witnesses, remanding for retrial in Lamb County. Local investigators press on as a Galveston suspect remains held for questioning in the Hunts’ deaths.
About 300 Legionaires gathered at USC hall Tuesday for the Birthday supper and barbecue to mark the Legion birthday. Depart ment Commander Sam D Foreman delivered an address, describing the event as timely and interesting.
Milam County Commissioners Court ordered a prohibition election to be held on April 8 after a petition by local ministers and others. This marks the first such election in the county in 26 years under the new signature rules.
Virginia Gayda a prominent Mussolini mouthpiece was killed in Rome when Amelican Marauder B 26 bombers attacked. His body was found among debris at his home and his family perished. The bomber pilot may receive the Congressional Medal of Honor. A family visit is noted for Placedo residents Cree Bridgewater and daughters.
H B Belt 88 pioneer resident of Milan county and Missouri native died at 6 pm Wednesday at Hillcrest Hospital in Waco after a fall and hip fracture. He lived in Milano 60 years and was a teacher and farmer. Survived by widow Molly Belt five daughters and one son. Funeral 3 pm Thursday Green Funeral Home Cameron with Rev Isbell. Burial Rice Cemetery.
The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals reversed the Olton conviction of Dr W R Newton for assault with intent to murder Dr Roy Hunt and remanded for new trial due to trial errors. The case will return to Judge Russell in Olton. Mrs Newtons venue moved to Plainview.
North Central Church of Christ announces the appointment of Ira Lee Sanders as its new minister. A Tennessee native with 30 years in the ministry, he has served in West Texas and pastored in Harrisburg Houston Athens Fort Worth and Houston. He plans mission work in Milam county with a schedule to be announced in April. Mrs Sanders and their son Amos will move to Cameron after Houston school ends in June.
Forecast shows gathered data with Wednesday high near 70 and Thursday low around 55. Rainfall logged at 0.45 inches on Wednesday and 0.02 inches by noon Thursday, with total rainfall to date about 11.62 inches. Fort Worth Weather Bureau reports cloud cover, light showers continuing tonight, and Friday mostly clear and warmer with Temple rainfall around 25 percent.
