Milam Taxpayers Save $500,000 on Bond Refunding

Milam County taxpayers will save more than $500,000 on outstanding road bonds through a refunding act. Gasoline tax revenues fund the savings starting this year, with one cent from the four cent tax set aside to pay maturities. Gibb Gilchrist, chairman of the Board of County and District Road Indebtedness, notes early payments are too scattered to show significance.

Milam County Meat Show Planned in Cameron

Milam County hosts a meat show in Cameron on April 6 and 7. Exhibits start at 1 p m on the 6th with community displays including cured hams bacon and sausage and multiple canned items. Lola Blair and specialists Snyder Regenbrecht will judge and demonstrate canning and cutting.

Cameron Parent-Teacher Association met last Thursday with a noted program by faculty. Miss Mary Ellen Jeter presented an paper on Spiritual Value of the Arts with student sketches, Adele Wilkerson led pupils and choral numbers, Dorothy Blaylock read, and the group vowed to erect a fence around the newly graded playground.

Clarence Booker Indicted for 1932 Cameron Murder

Clarence Booker, a black man, indicted this week by a McLennan County grand jury for the murder of Cameron grocer Andy Smith on December 21, 1932. He is jailed in Waco awaiting trial and will be returned to Cameron to face the charge after notice to the county sheriff.

Senate to vote on beer and wine legalization

The United States Senate prepared to vote on a bill passed by the House to permit legal beer and wine within 15 days. Twenty three states have paved the way for legal beverages, affecting 72 million people, while Texas contemplates a 1834 ratification vote and fair enforcement under existing laws.

Hoarded gold turned into Cameron vaults

Approximately $10,000 in gold and gold certificates was turned into Cameron banks by Wednesday night. Following Roosevelt’s banking moratorium and the Treasury demand for gold deposits with the Federal Reserve, Cameron banks opened on Tuesday. Deposits exceed withdrawals by two to one and normal conditions prevail with confidence restored.

Buckholts Bank Reopens After Governor’s Closure

Buckholts State Bank opens for business on a Wednesday after statewide closures. Director Thomas W Adams reports the bank is sound and safe and resumes normal operations following President Roosevelt’s proclamation changes.

Milam County Banks Opened As Requested

All Milam County banks were opened and doing business as Weal. Oxeheer Smith, president of the Milam County Bankers Association, urged a simultaneous reopen and the request was granted. Deposits rose and about $15,000 in hoarded gold was turned into county bank vaults. Friday, March 17 is the last day to surrender gold at banks without penalty.

Milam County approves banks as depositories for funds

Milam County Commissioners Court designates Citizens National Bank and First National Bank as county depositories. Citizens National receives 220000 bond limit plus 40000 school bond, First National 50000, secured to cover deposits. Interest on schools is 0.5 percent, other funds 1.5 percent, monthly on balances.

Milam County Farmers Seek Crop Production Loans

More than 150 Milam County farmers applied for crop production loans this season, with average requests under 100 dollars. Applicants must waive any crop liens, and funds may only be used for crop production. The deadline is April 30, 1988, with applications through local chambers and city offices.
