Thirty prize winners set record at VHS science fair
Thirty prize winners were honored Tuesday night as Yoe High School and Ada Henderson School held their largest science fair. Seventeen winners led a field of 124 VHS exhibits at Yoe Gym, with Mrs. Herbert Nance, Science Fair chairman, reporting the event to The Herald. In Ada Henderson Cafeteria a separate display saw 60 grade and junior high students enter poster and physical and biological projects.

John Yardley, 37, son of Milam County natives Finley and Johnnie Yardley, designed the Friendship 7 capsule for John Glenn's orbital flight. Based with McDonnell Aircraft, Yardley led a team that crafted the spacecraft and safety system, and worked closely with Glenn. Milam Tankers in Big Week of Inspections and Training
Milam county soldiers of Company C 3rd Medium Tank Battalion completed 13 weeks of intensified training at Fort Polk and Cameron. On March 7 they faced the Annual General Inspection and a Command Maintenance Inspection, displaying tanks weapons and gear. Sp4 Jimmie Love returned after armored vehicle maintenance school at Fort Knox and Sgt Kunz attended the National Guard Association convention in Galveston with his wife.

A coffee for John Connally, originally slated to precede the Cameron Chamber banquet, will be held 9 to 10 a m Friday in the Citizens Room. Connally is scheduled as main speaker Thursday night at the annual CofC banquet and will meet the public and officials at the meeting room in Citizens National Bank.

Group Petitions For Improvements In Cameron Negro District
The Cameron City Council heard a six man Negro delegation seeking a long range program for improvements in the Negro section. They request cleaning up paying and sewerage service and school enforcement. The council also sold the 1925 fire truck to Brazos Varrisco for 476 dollars and approved North Austin sewerline extension. Seventeen property owners signed a six inch sewer line petition with down payments. City plans include 300 gallons of paint and a pump for the Municipal Swimming Pool and paving extension on FE 12th Street from North Jackson to North Harding.

Mrs John A Smith Sr died Sunday March 4 after an extended illness at St Edwards Hospital. Born October 9 1879 in Burleson County she lived in Cameron for about 50 years. Survived by son John A Smith Jr daughter Mrs Ralph McCierran and several stepchildren grandchildren listed. Interment at Oak Hill Cemetery. Green Funeral Home directed with pallbearers named.
