J B White defends Milam County Commissioners for considering the Food Stamp Deal. He says the court has prudent judgment and should see merits without forced public campaigns. He warns against coercion and notes benefits of fund matching, urging careful local governance and unity across county sections.
The Band Parents Association announced plans for a Cameron Cooking School to be held in early April. Sponsored by Band Parents with all revenues staying in Cameron, the event aims for strong local cooperation with food handlers and noted lecturers. Mrs. Don Slocomb, president, said details will be announced soon.
The March term of the Grand Jury, in session for two days, adjourned late Tuesday afternoon. Forty five witnesses were examined. Of the three indictments two are misdemeanors sent to County Court, one is a felony.
Alvin Lee Lallier of Dallas died Wednesday at 52. A Cameron native, he moved to Dallas in 1913 to work for the Texas and Pacific Railroad, later joining the Wabash Railroad in St Louis before returning to Dallas in 1920 with the T P as an accountant. He married Tennie Mae Morris in 1909. survivors include his wife, two sons, a brother, two Dallas sisters, and a Fort Worth sister. Funeral services were held Thursday in Dallas with burial at Restland Memorial Park.
Rev. James H. Dreis of Okulgee Oklahoma will open a Catholic Mission at St. Monica's Cameron from March 9 to March 16. The mission invites Catholics and non Catholics to attend daily sermons on topics from Is there a Hereafter to Perseverance with Rosary and Benediction each evening. Rev. Geo J Duda is pastor.
Funeral services for Arthur Smith aged 59 were conducted Monday at Phillips and Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale with Rev. H E Crone officiating. He died Sunday after months of illness. A Milam County pioneer, he was a farmer and cattle man. Survived by his widow, two sons Arthur and Shelby of Rockdale, two daughters Mrs Vernon Dymke of Mobile Alabama and Miss Vasti Smith of Rockdale.
The Parent Teachers Association will close its membership drive in one more week. All parents or teachers who have not joined are urged to join within the next week. The association hopes to publish a list of paid members next week.
O L Kidd, Cameron attorney and former University Students association member, pays tribute at the association banquet. J M Ralston, born Nov 1 1854 near Jefferson City Missouri, taught in Missouri and Texas, ran drug stores in Brenham and Austin, later studied at University of Texas Law School and joined Milam County in 1884.
Cameron city council voted to plan eleven thousand feet of sewer lines across fifteen blocks in the Arnold Fleming Terrell Heights and Burns additions. The project, funded by 15000 dollars in WPA funds plus city treasury, will connect homes to the Green addition main lines with no tax or value hikes. Sewer charges remain at 2 cents per month, a city low in the state.
Joyce Cox, formerly general attorney for the Santa Fe railroad in Chicago, moves to Houston to join Fountain Cox Sandlin at 2828 Gulf Building. He will practice civil law as his family settles in, leaving his Chicago post to establish his name in Texas. The Houston firm promises greater opportunities for growth.
Local Board No. 2 issued two draft calls for March to fill its quota. Call No. 9 requests eight white men to report March 18, with volunteers expected to fill the quota. Call No. 10 seeks five Negroes, also to be filled by volunteers. A heavy draft is anticipated around March end or April 1.
Mr and Mrs Guy Wylette of Port Arthur visited their cousin Mrs Estelle Younts Thursday afternoon. Miss Lillian and Robert Rice of Thrall spent Thursday afternoon with her as well.
Germany presses Turkey to join the Axis while press in Ankara criticizes attempts at friendship. Hitler pledges protection to Turkey against Russia as Yugoslavia mobilizes reserves and Britain severs ties with Bulgaria and Romania.
The ninth annual Milam County meat show will be held in Cameron at the Waller building on a Saturday in March. Co sponsored by the Negro Councils of Agriculture and Home Demonstration and the Cameron Chamber of Commerce the event features 16 classes plus a smoked turkey exhibit. County agents C L Redus and E A Woods note many farmers adopted the Better Method for curing pork since 1940 and invite the public to attend from morning until 9 30 p m.
Milam County to eliminate an overpass at Highways 69 and 36 in Milano. The Commissioners Court and Highway Department will secure right of way, with Milam County bearing heavy costs. An earlier underpass near Rogers was charged to Milam County. Improvements to Highways 77 and 86 could reduce local complaints.
Ora Timmons of Milano transacted business in Cameron on Wednesday, engaging in a property deal and related arrangements.
H M Maddox of Milano was a business visitor here on Wednesday, stopping at local offices to discuss opportunities and networking with regional peers.
Lawrence Edward Killen 58 died late Wednesday at Santa Fe hospital in Temple after two weeks of illness. Born in 1883 in Galveston, he lived in Round Rock, Milano, Cameron, and finally Austin. He leaves a widow Mable Wright, two sons Wilson and Curtiss, two daughters Bernice and Mrs. R K Taylor, two sisters and a brother. Funeral services were held at Marek Burns in Cameron then in Round Rock with interment in Round Rock Cemetery.
Coach Carrol Wood, Cameron high school coach, has applied for the San Angelo High School head coaching job in Class AA. He spoke Wednesday of hoping to visit San Angelo soon, and leaves open the possibility of departure if offered the post.
Robbers burglarized the Leader Dry Goods Store Tuesday night using a skylight entry. A pliers pry marks the cash register from which $5 was taken, along with two leather jackets. Abe Fleischer reported no other losses. This follows a similar theft two weeks earlier near the Cameron Hotel.
Mrs Sims Scuddy a longtime Thorndale resident died in Dallas Tuesday. Funeral services were held in Thorndale Thursday afternoon.
Gordon Lowe of San Angelo visited Cameron over the weekend, staying briefly in the city and meeting local residents during the stay.
Cameron's Annual Invitation Track Meet will be held here Saturday March 8 with Jefferson Davis High School of Houston defending champion after winning 1939 and 1940 meets. Chas Hicks director and Jimmie Coleman presented a motion picture program at the Rotary Club detailing recent meets. Weather permitting hundreds of athletes from across the state are expected and entry blanks suggest strong attendance.
Cleveland Buffington of Gause died in a local hospital at 11 p m Wednesday following an automobile strike on the highway between Gause and Milano. He was injured Sunday when another vehicle struck him while he investigated a tire issue. He leaves a widow and six month old baby, his parents Mr and Mrs George Buffington, and his former Miss Mary Kilpatrick. Funeral services were held Friday in Gause with burial in the local cemetery.
The Cameron Chamber of Commerce sets its annual banquet for Tuesday night in Cameron. W. E F. Paden, manager, released the program after a directors meeting. Hubert M Harrison of the East Texas Chamber of Commerce will deliver the keynote address.
Alfred Prichard, a negro, who escaped from Milam County jail after midnight on Monday February 10, was arrested in Houston Monday afternoon by two policemen. Sheriff White and Deputy Black traveled to Houston to return him to Cameron for trial. He had been serving a burglary sentence at Huntsville.
