Ratheh Storey of Marlow and G M Houston of Minerva were appointed investigators for Milam age pension administration in the county. From Austin the appointments were announced. Senator Roy Sanderford of Belton announces candidacy for Texas governor in the Democratic primary of July 1936. He proposes a sales tax to fund the old age pension and would exempt state purposes from property taxes. He notes Bell County roots, education, service in the Air Corps, three children, church membership, and two terms as Bell County tax collector.
Judge W G Gillis announces first district court for 1936 will meet at Cameron high school auditorium on March 6 at 7 45 p m Awards will be given to Troop 52 Knights of Columbus and Troop 53 Masonic Lodge for advancement Scouts from Troop 50 Milano and Troop 63 Thorndale expected to qualify for badges An arch of boy life will illustrate growth from childhood through scouting The traveling trophy goes to the troop with the most miles traveled to attend the court of honor
In Houston last week attorney B P Matocha representing the Texas Securities Division argued before a three judge Federal Court challenging the constitutionality of the Securities Act. The case was submitted on briefs and a decision is expected within three weeks.
The Kraft Phoenix Cheese Corp opened its Texas plant on Monday March 2 marking Cameron’s centennial growth. Manager B M Alexander announced 2422 pounds of milk received on opening day with steady daily receipts despite bad weather. Routes cover Kirk Hanover Milano Ramsey Branchville Bally Rosebud and others. City council approved a permanent fair exhibit center with 15 acres located and $8000 federal funding toward an $11000 project to house annual fair exhibits.
Lumbermen from District 16 will convene in Cameron Monday March 9. The event is arranged by R P Fisher of the Jeter Lumber Company who spoke at a recent Austin convention. Mr Bickett the State Association secretary will be the chief speaker for the one day meeting. John Jeter of Jeter Lumber helps with arrangements and entertainment for delegates. It is the first time the convention meets in this district section.
Mr Green Jeff Cameron of Cincinnati will meet in Cincinnati Ohio at noon Wednesday on a business mission for Leland Green Funeral Home in Cameron. He will return in a modern LaSalle funeral coach to be used in the service here. The equipment is described as the most modern in America and the only such coach in Milam County. Wesley Majors will drive a coach back to Bon Bud as they travel to Chicago.
George Mayo Newton announces bid for re election to the Texas House of Representatives. The incumbent, first term representative elected in 1934, says he has kept all pledges and cites a generally good record as basis for a second term.
Cameron Country Club to reform after financial difficulties. Dr. James Watson named chairman of the reorganizing committee. A canvass will enroll new members and seek support from original members. The club operates a nine hole golf course attracting Central Texas residents.
The Cameron Milam county commissioners plan bids on March 12 for removing the two story county building at the courthouse square. Built in 1887 for 8939.72 dollars, it housed the county clerk and courts and has stood as a historic county landmark.
Senator W R Poage of Waco a longtime Texas lawmaker and former 13th District senator announces his candidacy for the U S House from Texas eleventh district to succeed O H Csora who will not seek re election. He notes decades in legislative service and training at Baylor and the University of Texas.
Milam County records the first car load of Red Top cane seed shipped to market from Cameron by Green & Boedeker store. The shipment weighed 52 000 pounds and highlights a busy season of farm commodity shipments and March business revival.
L A Svetlik announces candidacy for Commissioner in Precinct No. 1 covering Buckholts Yarrellton Marak Ben Arnold and Burlington. He will make a formal announcement in next week's Herald and is a longtime Buckholts resident supported by friends.
Annual Chamber of Commerce banquet and officers election will be held Tuesday night in the basement of the Methodist church. Dr Joekel will address the business men with Rev J C Acrey as toastmaster. Tamburitza of St Edwards University Austin to provide music for the occasion. Ballots mailed. annual address by John B Henderson, president, to be printed for the event.
Mason Longmire, two year deputy under Gene Smith, resigns to enter business. He buys the W. C. Smith Grocery and Market in Wesr Cameron. Rural Milam County residents will receive light from government sponsored generating systems at Temple, with Texas Power & Light Company already starting rural development as the first Roosevelt utility in the area.
