W S S Minstrel in Cameron Raises War Stamps Funds

The W S S Minstrel presented by Cameron Young Women’s Business League drew a large audience and proved a success. Proceeds totaled 116 dollars for War Saving Stamps, with a large cast of local performers and a colored orchestra providing songs and dances.

Texas Declares Bone Dry State as Saloons Close

Texas becomes bone dry at midnight as about 750 saloons shut doors under a statewide prohibition act by the Thirty-fifth legislature. The ten mile dry zone around military camps and shipyards had already closed roughly 1900 saloons. Courts may rule on constitutionality, with fall as earliest likely decision. An anti road house act limits licenses to incorporated cities if the state law stands.

Farmers Union Plans To Build A Warehouse

The Milano local of the Farmers Union starts stock sale at five dollars per share to fund a large warehouse and marketing system for cotton and other produce. About fifteen hundred to two thousand dollars in stock is offered with state aid expected, and dividends will be shared among shareholders. G W Butts leads the stock sale and local merchants have already subscribed.

Wheat planting urged for home use in Milan area

A letter to Mr. T. F. Hardy and a Milano Gazette clipping urge Milan county Texas farmers to plant 3 to 5 acres of wheat this fall. The plan, not for profit, aims to grow flour for family use with Mr. J. H. Burnet pledging 5 acres per 40 acres, offering seed and coordinated milling.

Young Electrician William D. Cone Dies in Oklahoma Accident

William Dewey Cone age 20 son of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Cone of Cameron Texas died June 21 1917 in Blackwell Oklahoma when he touched a live wire while at work as an electrician. He left a wife Zelma Stedman and a 18 month old son W D Jr and a sister Mrs E C Pace. Funeral held at 5:30 p.m. at his parents home with Rev Blaylock officiating. Interment in Oak Hill Cemetery.

County Agent Urges Rape as Fall and Winter Pasture Crop

The county agent advises planting rape on rich land for hogs and calves, outlining preparation steps from July 1 to September 15, and promoting seed oats, cowpeas, millet, and sorghum for fall crops. He warns of cotton wilt and recommends wilt-resistant varieties and iron and Brabham cowpeas, plus a charcoal worm preventive for pigs.

Dave Wilson cashier of Cameron's Citizens National Bank and Willard Chambers longtime manager of Chambers Auto and Supply in Cameron have purchased the Ford Agency in Bryan Brazos County from Johnson and Rhode. Wilson will run the new agency while Chambers enters training camp. the change takes effect on the first of the coming month.

Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hefley hosted a Monday swimming party for their niece Christine Hefley who left Tuesday for McAlester Oklahoma. Guests drove to Little River near McCownbridge where they enjoyed a swim and a picnic lunch supervised by Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hefley Mr. Frank Hardy and Mrs. Joe Hefley.

The Girls Auxiliary of the Presbyterian church held a Monday evening social with a picnic and supper by the river. Chaperones included Mr and Mrs Harvey Caldwell, Mrs E N Shaw and Miss Sallie Kate McLane. Guest was Miss Sadie Hamilton of Ballinger.
