Milam County Blue Hole Raid Nets 39 Arrests

Blue Hole on the North Bank of the South San Gabriel in Georgetown was raided Sunday. Police reported 39 arrests, mostly military personnel from Killeen or Ft Hood, drawing locals’ ire over access.

Road grader crashes into home in Oglesby incident

A road grader visiting Mr and Mrs August Schnick of Oglesby suffered power steering failure last week causing the machine to shear a power pole and crash into their brick home hitting the bedroom wall. The Schnicks were watching TV in the living room and were not hurt.

Rockdale Council OKs Subdivision Ordinance

Rockdale city council approved a subdivision ordinance amid praise from a builders and developers spokesman. He said the earlier ordinance had about a dozen objectionable points that would raise costs for developers and pass higher prices to home buyers.

Driver sentenced in headon crash near Somerville

The driver of one vehicle in a headon collision north of Somerville on April 16 was sentenced to two years in prison. He admitted stopping in Cameron to buy a six pack and had emptied five cans at the time of the crash.

Pigeon Drop Nets Cash In Old Scam

A businessman was robbed of 3250 dollars last week by two black males who offered to give him 3000 if he could show that amount in cash. When he produced the money the pair grabbed it and fled. No arrests have been made.

Chamber Names New Manager for Cameron Area Chamber

The Cameron Area Chamber of Commerce announced Mrs. Cindy Lafferty as the new manager succeeding Mrs. Barbara Smitherman who resigns effective mid July after over 20 years. Directors discussed a proposed Cameron area magazine brochure and plans for the October 1 arts and crafts show sponsored by the chamber ladies committee, plus an antique car show on the downtown mall. Reeves Brown noted a forthcoming farmers market. Charles Strode chairs the trade development committee.

Lost Hunters Return Safe

Two hunters reported missing by relatives were found safe Thursday morning at the Rockdale country club around 9 30. Frank Minor 70 of Rockdale and Turner Farrell 49 of Caldwell were hunting Wednesday night and became lost during the night before locating the country club and their pickup.

Rockdale Board Names Trustee and Hires Officials

The Rockdale school board appointed Jerry Kirk as trustee to succeed Dr. Phillip Young who resigned for personal reasons. Travis Grindle was hired as junior high principal replacing Ernie Laurence who left for health reasons. Fred Betha the tax assessor resigned and several new teachers were hired. Trustees approved buying five lots at Belton and College Streets.

Oak Trees Jam Trailer Truck In Freak Mishap

A trailer truck ran off Highway 77 north of the Elm Creek bridge and was blocked by two live oaks. No injuries were reported to driver Marvin Mayberry of Shiner. The Tasmana Corp of Donna owned the truck which was empty. DPS Trooper Milton Wright said the truck veered into a pasture, then became wedged between cab and trailer. Cleanup took about three hours with a chainsaw.

Summer Rec Program Draws 300 in Cameron

The Cameron summer recreation program, sponsored by the Arts & Service League and the City of Cameron, opened June 6 and runs through July. About 300 participants aged 3 to adult enrolled, with tennis and baton twirling most popular. Instructors include Kathy Dodd and a team of local teachers.

Drainage study planned for West Cameron area

A West Cameron drainage study begins this week with survey crews placing marker stakes along the channel from Butte Street to 12th. The Community Development Agency will hold public meetings after completion to obtain easements amid repeated flooding complaints.

Agreement Reached In Suit After Three Days Of Testimony

A Friday morning settlement ends a $975,000 damage suit in 20th District Court over an April 9 accident near Rockdale. Plaintiffs George Henry Stephens and L.D. Wilhite claimed William Douglas Brown and Otto Brogger, tied to Gaither Ford Tractor Sales, caused injuries when Brown raced his vehicle against Brogger's while Brown was employed. The jury heard three days of testimony before the agreement was announced.
