Milam County census is delayed as District Census Supervisor W. H. Skelton reports some farmers and operators did not provide required information. The tally for central Texas counties is being compiled and may be announced Thursday, with indications of surpassing the 1940 mark.
Cameron postoffice to close Saturdays at 12:00 noon beginning June 17 due to Federal funding cuts. Stamp and money order windows will close. city deliveries and rural routes remain unchanged. Substitutes’ hours cut, regular staff unaffected. Public reaction mixed amid ongoing Congress action to restore full service.
Cameron tomato growers received market letters showing a new record price of 16¢ per pound for No 1 green tomatoes delivered in Jacksonville. Jacksonville has long been the center of production and packing, with out of state trucks seeking cargoes amid a crop shortage and potential price increases in coming days.
County Judge Dan Tyson proclaims June 19 to 24 as County Wide Clean Up Week at the request of health authorities. He urges all residents to cooperate to bring the campaign to a successful conclusion.
City announces Thursday June 15 stores close at 1 p m and urging all men with trash trucks to sweep east side of Courthouse at 1 30 p m. Chamber and clubs fundraise for cleanup while spray plans delayed by DDT and chloradane shortage.
Judy Shapiro daughter of Dr and Mrs David Shapiro at Newton Memorial Hospital is progressing well after last weeks tonsil removal operation performed by her father Dr Shapiro. She will soon be home and friends welcome her return.
Thomas J. White, native of Cameron and former Rice Institute math teacher, becomes a research assistant at the Atomic Bomb Laboratory in Los Alamos New Mexico. He served five years in the Army Air Corps flying 51 combat missions before continuing aviation curriculum work in the Air Force. White and family moved to Los Alamos, joining his wife Ruth Marek White.
Geneva Wilson daughter of Mr and Mrs Lehman Wilson of Cameron was chosen by the Cameron Junior Chamber of Commerce as Cameron Beauty for a bathing revue to be held in Bryan June 17 sponsored by the Brazos Valley Jaycees. She is a University of Texas freshman beauty and could win 100 dollars. The Brazos Valley winner may enter the New Braunfels contest in July.
The State Democratic Executive Committee voted unanimously to strike J. E. McDonald from the July 22 primary ballot for Commissioner of Agriculture. McDonald vowed a mandamus action to force certification of his name and protested at the meeting, denouncing the move as undemocratic.
Frank H. Walzel launches Democratic primary bid for Milam County Clerk on July 22 1950. He cites lifelong Milam County roots World War I service American Legion membership and 25 years in public service promising a full time honest administration and personal vote solicitation.
Polio cases in 1950 rise to about ten times 1949 levels in Texas and the South. Local leaders urge fly and waste control, lime and DDT spraying, and full cleanup campaigns. Cameron declares a city-wide clean-up week June 12 to 15 under Mayor A N Green to improve sanitation.
The Kenney Brass Band from Brenham will provide music at an all day picnic at S. S&S and Methodius Church in the Marak community on June 18. A concert in the afternoon and night entertainment follow. Dinner starts at 11 a.m. with chicken and trimmings. sausage and other dishes available. From 5 to 8 p.m. supper and refreshments precede further entertainment. The church invites the public.
Leo Fuchs manager of Ideal Hat chery Cameron leaves by car for the National Poultry Improvement Plan conference at the Morrison Hotel Chicago Illinois. The gathering includes top poultrymen from across the United States to discuss rules and promote progress in poultry. Fuchs serves as director of the Texas Poultry Improvement Association and is noted as a leading local poultryman in Cameron and Milam County.
More than 200 milk producers and prospective producers attended a Milam County dairy meeting at Simon George Memorial Hall. Walter Lester presided as co chair. Guest speaker E R Eudaly of Fort Worth urged fundamentals for dairy success and noted potential for county production.
Paul Graves chairman of Milam County PMA urges all persons intending to buy cotton from farmers in Milam county this fall to visit the PMA office in Cameron and leave name and address. The county PMA committee will inform buyers about cotton marketing quota regulations and provisions and provide the necessary requirements once they are identified and reachable.
The final filing date for the July Primary is midnight Saturday June 17. The Democratic Executive Committee meets June 19 to organize the ballot set election managers and assess filing fees. County and state ticket sizes are expected near-typical for recent ballots with some candidates not yet official.
Health officials led by Dr. E S Freeman announce a citywide cleanup starting June 12 aimed at polio risk and the fly as a key vector. They warn only firm enforcement and public cooperation can curb long standing filth and disease in Privy Row, Cameron, describing private liberty as hindering sanitary progress.
In Milam County Palestine spring tourism could bring vast economic benefit as dogwood forests open to visitors. The piece urges purchase of a $1 car ticket to fund road repairs markers and services supervised by Gene Dixie Walker, noting no charge for his oversight.
