Curtis Barron, a Milam County saddle maker and horse trainer, recalls starting young in World War II era San Angelo. He and his wife moved back to Milam in 1948, transitioned from boot shops to saddle making, and now craft saddles, belts, and gear while training horses and raising cattle. Barron notes tooling leather is an art and highlights aging tools, teaching neighbor Paul McDermott, and their family’s rodeo involvement.
Milam Countys farmers and ranchers plan to attend the 11th Annual Stiles Farm Foundation Field Day on June 19 near Thrall. Lt. Gov. Bill Hobby will keynote a 5 p.m. program after tours at 2 p.m. The event features crop and livestock demonstrations, information booths, and a barbecue to close.
