A tornado like gust dipped behind the W. C. Wallace residence on East Seventh Street at about 1:30 a.m. Monday. The big pecan tree was reduced to kindling and two other trees lost large limbs. The home near Judge Wallace's sister on East Sixth Street escaped with little damage.
Two Cameron men died in separate one car crashes Saturday. Bobby D Talafuse 18 formerly of Cameron and Dwight Cavil 22 died in Jacksonville and Rosebud incidents on highways 79 and 77. Carolyn Walker 19 remained hospitalized with a 14 month old child reported in good condition.
A Tuesday luncheon was cancelled for June 12 and the next gathering is set for July 10 at the center. Volunteer firemen responded to a fire at the Orange Bowl on Highway 77 around 8 p.m. Monday. the cause is unknown and damage was limited. Owner George Spoon was treated for smoke inhalation at St. Edward Hospital and released.
Folk Fete weekend kicks off with a beauty contest Thursday at the National Guard Armory and runs to Saturday night. The downtown parade features an Fort Hood army band and Yoe High band, with plans to broaden participation and add authority. A limb fell on a pickup near the Wallace house, breaking part of a bench and fence. Milam County Sheriff welcomes a new state radio system and bids to dismantle a warehouse for a new jail.
Cameron Library board approved noon hours from June 11 and launched youth programs including a six session story hour for ages 7 to 12 with two evening telescope nights. A paperback shelf will be added and donations invited. Starting June 20 informal hobby and craft meetings for ladies run 1 30 to 3 p.m. twice monthly.
Cameron City Planning Commission backs a town meeting to discuss $39,890 in federal revenue sharing funds for the first half of 1973. Eight categories guide spending while residential garbage rates rise from $2 to $2.75 monthly effective July.
Kathryn Kahler a Tulane junior joins as summer features and ad layout worker. Janet Craven of Rockdale assists in the composition department succeeding Elaine Bastow. Firemen grants approved for convention and school fire training. Cameron Housing Authority fills vacancy with Odell Biggs.
Cameron gears up for Folk Fete with a Thursday beauty pageant at the Methodist Fellowship Hall and Friday armory events. Queen coronation at 8 p.m. Thursday, parade Saturday with Fort Hood color guard, honorary marshals Dan Kubiak and Jim Ham, and a full schedule of bands, dances, fiddlers contests, and ethnic performances through Saturday. Admission ranges from 75 cents to $1.50.
The Folk Fete parade in Cameron starts 10 a.m. Saturday with local and out of town floats. Dana Kestenbaum leads the parade committee as trophies are awarded in visitors and local float divisions.
Texas House Education Committee chaired by Rep. Dan Kubiak to hold public hearings mid June on school financing as part of the 63rd regular session. Meetings set for June 18 and 19 on the House floor. Governor Briscoe opposes a special session while TEA and Tax Committee study options for 1975 recommendations.
