Texas A&M student electrocuted on roof incident

A&M student Glen Bennett, 19, was killed last Monday afternoon when he touched electrical wires while trimming roofing material from a roof in Lampasas Texas. He fell from a metal ladder and was fatally electrocuted.

Greyhound Bus Collides With Scraper Near Calvert

Five people were injured when a Greyhound bus hit a highway construction dirt scraper two and a half miles north of Calvert last week. The bus front end was severely damaged while the scraper driver escaped injury. Passengers and the driver were treated and released at area hospitals. The crash occurred amid highway widening work.

Cameron to Upgrade Fannin Avenue and Industrial Road

The Texas Highway Commission approved Cameron upgrades under the 1975 76 Urban Systems Program. Planned work includes reconditioning Fannin Avenue from SH 36 to 22 Street at about 40000 dollars, 22 Street to US 77 at 10000 dollars, and Industrial Road parallel to the railroad with 22 Street to US 77 at 50000 dollars. Federal review and construction funding follow. Delton A. Kittrell oversees Cameron projects with local and state officials coordinating.

Thorndale Girl Crowned Folk Fete Queen

Tami Gray of Thorndale, a 17 year old Thorndale High senior, was crowned Folk Fete Queen after 14 contestants competed for the title and a $50 savings bond. First runnerup Monica Otten of Hearne, second runnerup Leslie Luecke of Cameron. Judges included L R Patterson, Harold Whittington, Jody Grant, Susan Diamond, and Sid Duderstadt. The queen was crowned at Friday’s armory dance and rode on a parade float Saturday.

Lafferty Named Missions Director

J E Lafferty former Cameron pastor becomes director of Area Missions for the Baptist FIRM area He will counsel 70 churches across a multi county region and move his home to Rockdale He was active in civic groups including the Chamber of Commerce and the Noon Lions Club and the local church will be served by supply ministers until a new pastor is hired.

Cameron's Urban Renewal Named in Horizons Display

Cameron's urban renewal project was selected for the Horizons on Display Program by ARBA. A. W. McCullin said the office will submit a resume and before and after pictures. The HUD letter notes 200 projects will be recognized for demonstrated community solutions across varied fields.

TP&L warns of power blackouts if gas banned

TP and L president J F Skelton told the Texas Railroad Commission in Austin that prohibiting natural gas as a boiler fuel would force massive blackouts and brownouts. He said 5 percent of TP&L generating capacity depends on gas and that replacing gas with coal or nuclear would take decades and billions, risking hospitals, schools, industries, and homes.
