The Tree Beavers won the trophy for the first Folk Fete Marathon held Saturday. Teams ran eight miles and biked through the course starting near Buckholts and Ben Arnold, then finished at the mall. The Last Chance team also appeared with listed members and race monitors provided by local volunteers.
Folk Fete ’75 opens with a Saturday Marathon and runs through Sunday. A queen’s contest Thursday night features 12 entries judged in sportswear evening gown and talent. Activities include a themed parade crafts booths food from multiple cuisines and a chili cookoff and armadillo race at the National Guard Armory. Music dancing and performances by local groups fill the schedule across Friday Saturday and Sunday.
At the council meeting Mayor Dene Blake pushed to review the motion forming a three member committee to oversee street and drainage projects. The committee would study proposals and report to the mayor and council for action, with a June report planned.
State Director David Hartwig says Green Thumb crews will return to work on June 16. Congressional action released 12 million dollars to Green Thumb and four national contractors, allowing 196 workers to resume park development and school repair projects that were interrupted in April.
In the Region Three Texas Community Improvement Judging Tour Gause was named second place by judges Dr. Burl Richardson and Garland McIlveen with Miss Mary Cothran. The community earned 300 dollars total for 1974-75, including 100 for District 10 first place and 200 for regional second. Green Thumb crews will implement projects across numerous counties, aiding nutrition sites and library aides among others, with 991 workers in 29 counties statewide.
