Parched lands began recovering as general rains fell Monday across the county. Totals ranged from .65 inches in Cameron to up to 2 inches elsewhere, with 1.5 to 2 inches in the black belt. Cantaloupe and watermelon crops in the eastern sand country were saved. corn may be stunted but a June rain could bring a harvest in some areas.
The Roberts 5¢ to $1.00 Store announces opening Friday and Saturday with 8 am start. N L Caperton, part owner and manager, promises free ice cream and two days of deep discounts as Cameron gains a new retail option. The new building features a pine floor, fresh decor, improved lighting, and a large fresh-stock selection from New York.
Milam County 4H and Demonstration Clubs announce Rally Day on June 20 in Rockdale. May 26 council meeting accepted an invite to meet in a neighboring city from the Young Men's Business League. Encampment dates July 9 and 10 are tentative with sponsors Mrs. Boatright and Mrs. Rettig. County representatives planned to attend the Bryan convention August 16 to 19.
E. A. Perrin superintendent of schools is in Detroit this week buying a new car from the Ford factory. Hefley Stedman Motor Co sold the vehicle. He travels with John Lane Baskin and Winiford Baldwin two high school students. They visited Chicago and St. Louis during the return trip.
Louis F. Gohmert, in Cameron for his 15th year in business, promotes weekly Saturday specials with bargains on everyday merchandise. His ad in The Herald highlights attractive prices of standard items of interest to all.
Memorial day services were held by the American Legion Sunday with Post Commander August Kunz presiding. The program included opening prayer by Rev. L Murchison pastor of the Methodist church, memorial roll call for Milam county boys killed in service, memorial talk by Rev. Murchison, readings of In Flanders Field by Doris Newton and Americas Answer by Shirley Horstmann, prayer by Rev. Murchison, and taps by Henry Dreyer.
Congressman Poage spoke at a Monday luncheon in the Christian church building in Milam County criticizing New Deal spending as wasteful. He, a former Texas Senator, framed his remarks around economy and government waste. At night he gave Rockdale’s graduation address. Judge Graham Gillis introduced him. Seventy guests paid for plates to hear the congressman. Hugh Mason of London was fined 75 dollars for an egg throwing incident in an election contest.
A Cameron market note states that prices shown are subject to fluctuation with market conditions. Local shoppers should expect daily variation as supply and demand shift.
Mr Caperton announces the formal opening of the Roberts be to $1 store here this Friday and Saturday. He serves as part owner and store manager.
Olen Fenner explained that combining terraces with strip crops buffer meadow strips contour fur rows sodded ditches and spillway outlets provides full soil erosion protection. A 60 mile Wilson School district tour May 26 drew 70 visitors including business people and Future Farmers.
Mrs. Sarah Loomis, 77, of Boston, was arrested for drunkenness. The judge admonished her with a quip telling her to go home and be good.
A baby boy named Charles Michael was born Tuesday afternoon at Cameron hospital to Rev. Maurice Grove and his wife. The Grove family is connected with the local Christian church. Mrs. M. Shaw of Big Springs, mother of Mrs. Grove, is visiting.
The Herald plant was burglarized over the weekend with thieves targeting brass and copper. Lino type equipment was found in an alley adjoining the building as officers investigated the incident. Official sanction was granted to Jack Owings Jr to stage July 4 races for the American Legion. A track with hazards has been built in Wilson-Ledbetter Park. Mr and Mrs Jesse James left for Dallas for Mrs James to have a tonsil operation. Mrs John Bonds of Rockdale is critically ill with little improvement after a crisis weeks ago.
Burke's new store in the C N Green building next to the Chas Green grew crewy shows rapid sales since opening. Mr Burke returned from Dallas Monday night and the store maintains an aggressive advertising policy with weekend specials for the territory. A stray hen laid an egg on a jewelry work bench in Wellington Kansas at E B Roser's shop.
Frank Bankes of Kilgore remains in Cameron hospital with a slight chance to save his right arm after a highway wreck east of Cameron. Beil county men Wm Bland and Hoyle Pitts were jailed but Sheriff Kennedy said they would be released with no charges. Bankes was found by Ray Burke after the crash near Will Vaughn's homestead.
Funeral services for Mrs. J. M. Stutts 62 were held at Rice church with Rev. O C Acrey and Rev. Vernon G Miles officiating. Interment in Rice cemetery. Pallbearers listed. She died after a stroke in Nov. Surviving husband seven children and fourteen grandchildren. Also note: Mrs Helen Johnson of Chicago sues for divorce citing stingy husband.
Cameron's softball league starts Friday night June 4 announced by W B Skelton. Proceeds go to Cameron Band. Doubleheaders played twice weekly at Yoe High Athletic Field. Friday night matchups Knights of Pythias and Markham versus Maysfield. Monday June 7 features Baskin versus Ben Arnold and Little v Burlington as entertainment.
Chas. F. Green Grocery advertises a week of bargain foods at prices readers can afford. The store in the N. Green building invites shoppers from the territory to visit this new location and explore trimming prices on a wide range of items.
The Baptist annual Daily Vacation Bible School will convene at 8 a.m. Monday June 7. Rev. Vernon G. Miles announced the church’s program. Registration day is Friday June 4 for students in the recreation show. The school will run for two weeks.
Milam county Woodmen lodges host a one day convention in Cameron on Tuesday June 8. Dr Koerth from World Memorial Hospital San Antonio attends along with district and state Woodmen officials. A 7 pm motion picture program invites the public and events include a street parade a noon basket lunch a 2:30 pm baseball game and a 6 pm dinner.
