Milam County Sees Four High Schools In Future

Milam County Superintendent H D Maxwell predicts only four high schools will remain in about ten years as enrollments shrink. He spoke to Cameron Rotarians noting consolidation trends, loss of San Gabriel's eight grade system to Thorndale, and plans to aid smaller districts with reading and science programs and library displays.

Cameron building boom nears million dollar year

Cameron construction totals for 1960 are on track to top 1 million dollars for the second time in four years. Marilyn Hughes Crowned Milam Farm Bureau Queen

Miss Marilyn Hughes 17, a Yoe High senior and Nurses Club member, was crowned Milam County Farm Bureau Queen last Thursday in Cameron. Runner up Miss Gloria Marak, a 1960 Yoe graduate, hails from Buckholts. District winners move on to state and later national Farm Bureau events.

City Police Report One Minor Accident

Cameron police officials report one minor accident this week involving vehicles driven by Emil Frank Vaculin and Steve August Mueck. Damage was slight to both vehicles, a 1956 Ford driven by Mueck and a 1951 Chevrolet pickup driven by Vaculin. Neither man was injured.

Fatal double shooting ends in Cameron tragedy

John Mraz Jr. about 55 shot and killed his wife, 50, then himself at their Cameron home after an evening dispute. Police found a .38 pistol, $145 cash, and evidence of earlier arguing. Survived by daughter Mrs. William Bailey of Corpus Christi and sister-in-law. This was Cameron’s first fatal shooting in about four years.

Milam County National Guard Completes Summer Camp

Milam County's Company C 3rd Medium Tank Battalion within the 49th Armored Division finishes a crowded week at North Fort Hood. Guardsmen trained with pistols rockets and tank guns, bivouacked on Royalty Ridge, and practiced war games before a 49th Division parade. Carolyn Ann Young of Rockdale, sponsored by SP4 Howard S. Drummond, placed fourth as a sweetheart finalist chosen by Donald O Connor and honored at a Fort Hood Service Club dance.

Suspect Arrested In Auto Theft Case In Cameron

A 17 year old Milano Negro, Lawrence McGowan, was bound over to District Court on burglary charges after police arrested him at about 12 30 a m Tuesday trying to take a car from Culpepper Motor Co Cameron. He confessed to five vehicle thefts from Cameron auto dealers in July and breaking into Cameron Ice Co. He said he found keys in ignitions and would drive vehicles home between 2 a m and daylight ending the spree, according to Officer Warren McCall and police dispatcher Gene Kirk.

First Maize Totals 40 Carloads Here

Cameron maize buyers reported about 40 carloads brought in by press time Wednesday in the first week of the county maize harvest. Officials at Milam Grain Co and Wilson Grain & Elevator each reported about 20 carloads by mid week. The crop is expected to run about the same as 1959. Officials noted many maize growers added extra cotton acreage with additional cotton allotments allowed in Milam County.

Newton Memorial Hospital fund nears $50,000 goal

The Newton Memorial Hospital drive reports about $48,000 in contributions and pledges toward a $50,000 minimum, with $2 and $10,000 gaps identified for finalizing costs. Bids exceeded expectations by about $50,000, and plans to close the fund HQ in Cameron are delayed about 10 more days as local donations continue.
