Six Women Enter Milam County Farm Bureau Queen Contest

Six contestants will vie in the Milam County Farm Bureau Queen Contest on July 21 at 8 p m in the Fellowship Hall First Methodist Church. Judges will score poise appearance and personality with a one minute talk on Farm Bureau topics. County winners advance to the District Contest in Cameron August 27 with state and national opportunities culminating in December in Denver. Contestants include Virginia Abel Gloria Marak Joyce Fuchs Marilyn Hughes Claire Gielchrist and Marianne Jones.

Cameron Western Week draws crowds with toy gun play and surprises

Early week in Cameron features hundreds of children in Western Week gear, including toy six guns and sombreros, as adults scout downtown and a courthouse lawn surprise looms. Floods in Plainview and Cameron’s two hour downpour punctuate a week of headlines, with the Cameron Saddle Club horse show closing the festivities and thousands expected for the parade.

Elm Creek Watershed Bond Vote Set For Saturday

Voters in the Elm Creek watershed will decide on a $200000 bond issue endorsed by the Cameron Chamber of Commerce as the first stage of a $5 million project. Milam County would bear about a third of the cost with two polling places at Yarrelton and Marak. The plan aims to improve Elm Creek from Little Elm to its confluence with Little River near Cameron, clearing trees and filling sloughs over roughly five years.

Cameron Western Week Builds To Big Parade

Cameronites spent the week joining special events from a coon hunt and dog chase to a tooth pulling by a local dentist. Onlookers watched des para does captured on horseback and a courthouse square song led by the Couples Club as searchlights lit the city. Final judging comes at the Western Dance and anticipation builds toward the big parade.

Western Week events loom in Cameron with a parade starting at 5 30 Friday drawing up to 12 000 spectators for the horse show and gaited entries at Wilson Ledbetter Park Saddle Club officials report a record field exceeding 360 quarterhorse entries and 20 25 saddle clubs invited Officials note seating for 700 1000 and ample standing room.

Mondrik Plans Large New Supermarket on North Travis

A. J. Mondrik of Mondrik's Minimax announces a single story brick supermarket on the 700 block of North Travis Ave. The roughly 10 000 square foot store will include a bakery and four checkout counters with parking for 100 cars. Construction start date not set. Mondrik will continue operating the existing Santa Fe Town store. The lot is being cleared of several large trees.

Fifth Milam Road Fatality Kills Iowan, Two Injured

A Tuesday collision near Cameron left Wallace Harley Thurman 30 of Cherokee dead on arrival at Newton Memorial Hospital. His wife Gloria Thurman is in critical condition with multiple injuries. A separate Saturday accident near Branchville put David Tally 78 on the critical list after his 1950 Buick hit a bridge bannister.

Cameron Events Schedule Hits Western Week

A crowded lineup lists February Western Week activities across Cameron venues. Highlights include a 2:00 p.m. event Friday, group singing at Courthouse Square, a 9:00 p.m. Thursday National Guard Armory appearance, a 10:30 a.m. Friday parade event, and multiple horse shows and dances at Wilson-Ledbetter Park and Downtown Cameron.

Officials To Open NMH Bids Friday

Bids for Newton Memorial Hospital construction will be opened at 2 p m tomorrow at fund drive headquarters. Contributions have reached $45 000, about $5 000 shy of the Cameron drive goal. The project total is $250 000 to $300 000 with federal funds up to $200 000 and $60 000 from outside Milam County.

Baseball Field Dedicated July 6 In Cameron

A July 6 dedication night drew a capacity crowd for Cameron's new baseball park. League president Bassel Wilson praised workers and donors, urged Cameronites to take pride, and introduced the league board, Women's Auxiliary, managers, and team photographers.

Beards Compete for Prizes in Western Week Beard Contest

Cameron hosts a Western Week beard contest drawing wide interest. Cameron Country Club hosts the Central Texas Women’s Golf Association tournament with 35 entries. Mrs. Marvin Norcross of Waco shoots 82 to lead low gross. Mrs. C. M. Burke of Cameron shoots 72 for low net. Dallas’s Mrs. T. D. Harvey wins championship flight with 90 gross. Mrs. Guy Henry of Ennis takes low net 78. Second flight sees Mrs. Jack Curtis 93 gross and tie for low net 76 between Mrs. Coy Arledge of Cameron and Mrs. E. W. Groth of Dallas.
