The Nixon Administration canceled the federal rural low income housing loan program in Central Texas. Milam Falls counties rural families faced loss of interest credit loans that would have helped 15 households buy homes in 1972 73. For incomes under 7000 the program offered loans at reduced rates as low as one percent. Other canceled items include farm labor housing loans and rental or cooperative housing loans.
The Williamson County deer season produced an estimated 2000 to 2500 total deer killed, including bucks and does. The heaviest buck weighed about 119 pounds. No fatalities occurred in deer hunting, though dove season accidents were reported.
Lone Star Gas Co ends a 100 percent natural gas curtailment at Alcoa Rockdale Works after a 75 percent reduction in January and full cutback the next day. Limited operations resume in the smelter units including re-draw rod mill ingot plant carbon plant and atomizer.
James H. Russell and Larry W. Ingram announce the transfer of the 106-year-old Belton Journal to Ingram effective March 1. Ingram acquires the weekly paper and job printing plant from Russell and plans continued publication. The Journal remains among Texas's oldest continuously published newspapers.
The Hearne City Council adopted a wait and see stance on joining with Bryeza to acquire storage tanks. The plan would let both cities buy diesel in summer at about 10 cents a gallon amid natural gas curtailments and further fuel cutbacks.
Superintendent Avery Downing urged the Waco Independent School District board to study boundaries again to fix inconsistent high school attendance. He noted a year and a half of struggles with senior high zones and questioned current patterns for student attendance.
Bell County officials expressed interest in Harold Harris's proposal to dispose of solid waste by incineration rather than landfills. Belton Troy and Morgan's Point officials welcomed incinerators now while Temple cautioned it could adopt the approach in the future.
The Institute of Texan Cultures announced a second statewide Texas Folklife Festival, September 6-9, 1973, with foods, music, dances, arts, crafts, and contests. Executive Director R Henderson Shuffler aims for family fun and higher visitor participation. O T Baker returns as festival manager.
A large cattle run at Cameron Livestock Auction Thursday saw 2200 receipts with half cattle and half hogs. Feeder steers and calves jumped $2 to $4, while hog prices eased. stock cows rose to $35-$40.50. High feed costs and limited supply drive overall gains, with experts predicting higher meat prices ahead.
Volunteer marchers and drivers are needed for the Mothers March of Dimes. Meet Tuesday January 30 at 6 p.m. in the fire station meeting room. Chairman for the mothers march is Mrs. Florence Mussner.
Acco Oil & Gas of Houston plans to drill No 1 Grady Nelson wildcat in Milam County on a 46.66 acre Lewis Wells lease, three miles east of Milano and near Cherokee Navarro Field. Location permits to 3 500 feet with Navarro as the objective. spud date awaited.
Trustees approved a reduced bond plan of 885000 for Cameron schools including ag addition new Yoe High and Ben Milam classrooms restroom renovations Ada Henderson Yoe High labs and a new physical education facility. Architect D D Matthews revised the project from 950000 after trustees deemed the higher amount unlikely to pass.
