Milam county jail prisoner Jack Crain slipped from his cell around 4 a m Saturday by sawing a path to liberty. He was recaptured Sunday afternoon asleep along the International and Great Northern rails near Rockdale by Constable Will Colvin. Earl Ray, Crain’s fellow escapee from Oklahoma, remains at large. Sheriff Kennedy traced the escape to a roof vent and pump house before Crain and Ray disappeared into Little River.
Chairman Roy Baskin designates the old Cameron State Bank building as the polling place for the city primary on Tuesday February 4. The ballot will nominate mayor, two aldermen, city marshal, city attorney, and assessor and collector. No polling at the old school building. voter interest remains low.
Henry Hilavacek a farmer near Ad Hall returned home January 9 from Del Rio where he was a patient for several days at Dr Brinkley hospital He says his health has improved and plans a subsequent trip to Little Rock Arkansas for further treatment Colleagues heard his name read on the Brinkley station from Del Rio.
A partial line suggests a student was supported by scholarships and part time employment with reference to advancing education.
Cameron banks will be closed Monday January 20 in observance of the birthday of Robert E Lee born January 19 1807. Leland Green and Terry city aldermen announced re election bids with fuller details to follow in The Herald. Mrs H H Camp of San Gabriel died in a Temple hospital with funeral services planned near the Camp estate.
The First National Bank held its annual meeting Tuesday with stockholders and officers electing R. H. McIntosh as President H. M. Hefley as Vice President and Cashier Mrs. S. W. Cheeves as Vice President A. K. Gurecky as Assistant Cashier and Frank Cheeves as Director.
Miss Joey Jolley the state inspector visited Cameron on Monday to announce strict enforcement of the law requiring beauticians and beauty shop operators to hold valid licenses. She noted home operators without licenses have caused abuse of the regulation and warned operators will be held accountable for failures to obtain licenses.
R A Hairston, former Milam County commissioner, announces candidacy for the Dem primary on July 26. In Cameron he grants the Herald permission to publish his declaration, praising his years of service and urging support from Commissioner Precinct No. 3 voters as Rockdale’s largest precinct.
Barton Brown, 30, announced his candidacy for the marshal position in the city Democratic primary set for February 4. Reared in Cameron, Brown is described as a well known citizen who pledges greater energy and full-time dedication to the office.
Gene Smith, city marshal, announces for a second term subject to the Democratic primary on February 4. First elected in 1950, he began his service in 1934 and aims to continue policing with low crime and burglaries. Born in Gonzales Texas, his life spans a pivotal era in Texas history and he recalls frontier figures from youth.
Cameron Alleys starts a new series of eight five man teams this week. Four Class A and four Class B teams will compete beginning January 18. Participants drew numbers 1 to 30 to pair partners, with some numbers unassigned. entries sought within two weeks for a chance at individual prizes from the ALAVE.
Mr and Mrs McCall died in Austin after a long marriage of sixty three years. They left four sons and six daughters, twenty one grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted by Bro G H P Showalter at Memorial Park Cemetery in Austin.
On Saturday two inmates Marl Ray and Jack Cras escaped from the jail near the court house. Crain was recaptured in Rockdale on Sunday and returned, while Ray remained at large. This marks the third breakout in a year. a Black man, Robert Franklin, who escaped last February, is still at large and was indicted in Milam.
L. L. Blaylock former Milam county sheriff seeks the Cameron city marshal job in the Democratic primary on February 4. He has 16 years as sheriff and is known as a top peace officer, praised for solving crimes and “getting his man.” He announces his candidacy with broad public approval and no platform needed.
The body of Sterling Price Cross, 78, died January 12 at his son Harry Cross's Greenville home. It was transported to Cameron for funeral services at First Presbyterian Church conducted by Rev. O C Aerey. Interment followed at Oak Hill Cemetery with San Andres Lodge No 170 A F and A M in charge. Cross, born in Brunswick Missouri, lived in Cameron for about fifty years and worked as a royal agent for insurers and later with Hefley Dossett Company.
Mrs Inez Stewart died January 11 1986 after a two week illness from pneumonia in a local hospital. She lived in Milano and was born Inez Davidson daughter of Henry Davidson plantation owners in slavery days. Funeral services were held January 11 at Liberty Church with Rev Cleo Wooten and Rev J Cay Williams officiating. Interment followed in Liberty Cemetery.
