Cameron city records show 1953 permits totaling 384 109 dollars, down from 485 964 dollars in 1952. A total of 86 permits were issued in 1953 versus 152 in 1952, with December activity totaling seven permits worth 14 880 dollars.
Milam County Health Unit reports one nonparalytic poliomyelitis case in Rockdale. Four year old Marilyn Harwell, daughter of Mr and Mrs Mc Curin Harwell, admitted to Crippled Children's Hospital for polio treatment. The weekly tally from January 8 to 9 also lists 225 influenza cases, 3 pneumonia, 12 throat infections, scarlet fever, 10 measles, 2 gonorrhea, and single cases of potassium and shigellosis.
M Zarosky aged 68 died at his home near Temple Sunday January 10 after an illness. Born February 12 1885 in Czechoslovakia he came to the United States in 1904 and lived near Cameron most of his life. Survived by widow two sons Anton and Frank of Temple a daughter Caroline Bartek Temple four grandchildren two sisters Cecelia Sebesta and Charlie Ermis Cameron. one son Rudolph preceded him in 1940. John A. Smith presided at the January 7 board meeting in the County Farm Bureau office. Officers and directors revised by laws, then announced 1954 committees including Membership, Resolution, Legislative, Service, Auditing and Budget, with several members still to be named from Thorndale and Rockdale.
The first Fight Nite at Yoe High Gym opens Monday January 18 with Yoe Boxers facing Temple Boxers at 7 30 p m. About twelve bouts with four exhibitions are planned as a buildup to the District Golden Gloves in Temple February 3 4 5.
Lone Star Gas Co. opened a new thirteen mile Gause pipeline on January 10 feeding eight million cubic feet daily from the D. H. Byrd Green No. 1 well. The line ties to Cameron and serves about thirty towns across McLennan Coryell Bell Milam Williamson counties. Twenty seven crewmen and officials led by Earl Miller and Luther Talbert completed the project at a cost over 212000 dollars.
Cameron's new 52,000 dollar water tower began operation today. Water Department Manager Alvin Hefft said filling started at 10 20 a m and would reach about 3 p m. The 140 foot tank holds roughly 300 000 gallons and raises city pressure from 60 to 75 psi.
The Lloyd Albertson Battery C 649th Anti-aircraft Artillery Battalion held its first drill of the year on January 6 and underwent its annual Federal inspection. Lt. Col. Warren of the Inspector General's Office evaluated records equipment and armory facilities. ratings will be released in a later report. Notable officers present included Lt. Col. Bob B. A. Haenel Lt. Col. Olin F. Breuster Capt. Cleveland O. Bucklew Capt. Robert H. Wilds Capt. Rudolph E. Michalka Lt. Maxwell Jones CWO Augustus P. Dean and MSgt. Homer L. Gilmore.
Burkes-Howard Co invites the public to a January 23 at 7 30 PM IH Family Party at High School Gym featuring the Farmall Fair color movie and a stage show with professional acts. A parade of new Farmall machines and a New Equipment show with the Farmall Super C with Fast Hitch will also be displayed.
Milam County Farm Bureau hosts an open meeting on Thursday January 21 at 7 p.m. in the District Court Room inviting all members and the public. Texas A M College guest speakers Neal M. Randolph entomologist and Dr C M Patterson veterinarian discuss external parasites and keeping livestock healthy followed by questions and discussion.
Funeral services for Herman Dreyer aged 76 of Clarkson were held Sunday January 10. He died January 8 at Rosebud Hospital after a short illness. Burial took place at Vogelsang cemetery. He was born near Brenham and worked as a com er in Clarkson. He is survived by his widow in Clarkson and one son in Houston.
Representative Herman Yezak announces to the Herald his candidacy for a second term in the Democratic Primary. He will seek the Milam and Robertson Counties district after the Robertson County merger and promises a fuller announcement soon.
A Saturday evening single vehicle crash on U S 79 three miles east of Milano injured Mary Ritchey with lacerations to the face legs and feet. William G Ritchey escaped injury. The 1953 Ford Victoria was heavily damaged and brakes reportedly locked.
The first rainfall of 1954 fell in the Cameron area on Saturday and Sunday. It totaled .73 of an inch with .01 on Saturday and .72 on Sunday. The damp weather may have influenced plans to go to church Sunday.
Rev R B Baker of Marlow Baptist Church announced a $2000 church improvement program. The arrangement and finance committees met to launch a fundraising campaign including a new hardwood floor, mahogany pews, pulpit furniture, and foundation strengthening. Former members and friends are urged to participate.
The Battery C 649th Anti Aircraft Artillery Battalion reports four promotions and one reenlistment. Sgt Willie R Boecker reenlisted for three years in the mess section. Privates Charlies L Eanes Albert J Mikhalka Joseph L Mondrick and Layton D Scott all promoted to Private First Class. New enlistment applications were received during the Armory drive period this week.
An agricultural meeting in Pettibone focused on soil conservation with twenty six farmers attending. Edwin Fischer of the Central Texas Soil Conservation District explained district organization, equipment funding, maintenance, and replacement plans. The district has provided a stalk shredder, grain drill with legume seeding attachment, and a fertilizer distributor.
Cameron Jaycees started the year by forming a committee to study establishing a Cameron library. A Friday meeting, January 15 after 5 p.m., will be held at the Episcopal Church Parish House to discuss a small scale library and seek community support. Citizens are urged to attend.
The Georgetown Yoemen suffer a two point loss to undefeated West Trojans as Frei Petmecky leads with 16 points. A 27 25 B team defeat opens night, setting the stage for Friday’s district game against Georgetown High School and the Eagles.
