Dan Lunsford, a veteran city police member, was appointed city marshal for the full two year term after the death of Gene Smith. The council decided no election was needed, and Lunsford will serve until April 1944 with Joe Richter and Jim McGoldrick named deputies.
Arthur Haynes of Maysfield escaped from jail after being arrested for the Cameron Theatre robbery. He was returned to Texas and sentenced to four years. Charlie Wilkerson of Branchville also linked to the robbery was sent to Gatesville reform school.
Moscow reports the Red Army is within 25 miles of Smolensk, a key city held by Germans since June 1941. Violent fighting surrounds Leningrad area amid a possible large Soviet push toward Poland’s border. French gains in North Africa are noted.
John H. Bickett Jr. was appointed by Gov. Stevenson to the Board of Regents. He was born in Cameron and lived there until childhood, with his mother Miss Muse. The family later moved to San Antonio where he reached adulthood.

War Department reports Tech. Sgt. Rudolph Balusek seriously wounded in action in North Africa. He served with Company D 13th Armored Regiment and landed with American expeditionary forces in October during World War II. Relatives have been notified. no details on the severity yet.

Mr and Mrs Henry Lippman spent last week in San Antonio visiting his mother Mrs B Lippman and during the trip they bought an early shipment of new spring goods for the local dry goods store.
Lieut. W. J. Caldwell of Cameron writes home announcing his commission as an Army Air Corps pilot from McDill Field Florida He is the son of Mr and Mrs Wilbur Caldwell and was trained as a flying sergeant Assigned to a new flight command with Lieut Thomas J White of Cameron as Flight Commander Caldwell flies the B 26 bomber after months of intensive training.
Lieut. Cox Thornton formerly of Cameron and a lawyer is now with the Military Police Service of the United States Army. He completed service in the Medical Corps and the Investigation Division since induction February 1, 1941, and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant on October 25. He is stationed at present in Turlock, California.
Lieut Grover C. Thornton Jr. becomes the second Thornton son to be commissioned. He entered service in 1942, trained in Huntsville and Atlanta, then Abilene for basic training. A Medical Corps officer, he was commissioned January 9 and is now at Fort Worth after graduating from Auburn Polytechnic in Veterinary Medicine.
Mrs John Matyastik visits Minneapolis to be at her sister Mrs Roy Kossman gravely ill then travels home reporting a grand trip and a white Christmas with plenty of snow seen during the journey.
Milam County Commissioners appoint Mrs. Sarah White to succeed her husband Walter White, who leaves to join the U S Army. White becomes Milam’s first female sheriff, with deputies Carl Black and Will Vaughn retaining key posts as leadership transfers occur amid wartime service.
Four Yee High School faculty members quit per Drayton McLane secretary of the school board. Dismukes resigns to a civil service post, Edwin Onstor replaces him. Bowmar leaves for West Texas. Mrs. Poteet takes her place. Leila Lee Batte and Miss Schrader receive conditional release to enlist. if they fail exams they return to the faculty.
Pvt. Rudolph Balusek of Cameron seriously wounded in action in the African theater. He served with a tank destroyer unit and is believed to have landed with invasion forces in October. Brothers provided information to EK. W. Streetman. no details released. He is one of five Balusek brothers.
Ruthie Marie Burts two year old daughter of Milton and wife of Houston was buried in Elliott Cemetery near Hearne after dying in the Burts home fire on January 5 1943 The family had lived in Hearne prior to moving to Houston about six months ago Green Funeral Home of Cameron directed arrangements.
Texas Bar Journal recounts Lt. Frank Newton of Cameron in the Army Air Corps. After plane shot down and crew losses, he joined the Air Corps, trained in California and Luke Field, then served from Barksdale to South America and likely Egypt. He writes of Italy’s scenery and loss of his guitar and trumpet to the Germans. Pvt John Krenek, Cameron, enjoys reading the Midget at the Army Air Force gunnery school in Kingman Arizona.
