Icebergs Threaten Alaska Tanker Route To Valdez
The U S Geological Survey warns Columbia Glacier may shed up to 50 cubic miles of ice into Prince William Sound over the next 20 to 50 years, disrupting tanker lanes to Valdez as oil shipments begin in 1977 after the 800 mile pipeline. Ice patrols and coordinated nudging by ships are proposed as mitigation.
