Morpa Grass Boosts Steer Gains in ARS Trial
In three year ARS field trials at Woodward Oklahoma Morpa weeping lovegrass increased steer gain to about 305 pounds per head per year against 272 for Common lovegrass. Morpa matched carrying capacity and drought resistance with no extra cultural or grazing management. Winter grazing ran from mid November to March 15 with spring hay feeding, then summer grazing resumed as pastures recovered.

Cotton Insect Control Through The Ages In Cotton
An entomologist tracks cotton pest management from 1892 boll weevil incursions through the DDT era to modern integrated control. The piece outlines calcium arsenate, later chlorinated compounds, organophosphates, resistance trends, and the shift to strategic, biology‑informed practices for optimal yields.

Pasture Management Reduces Cattle Poisoning Risks
Dr. Jim Wilson warns cattle producers that nitrate and cyanide poisoning from pasture grasses cause rapid, deadly effects. Nitrate accumulates in rye grasses and fertilized pastures, with factors like frost and drought increasing risk. Cyanide concentrates in sorghums, Johnson grass, corn, and other grasses under similar conditions. Prevention relies on avoiding high risk pastures, allowing taller growth, and grazing after frost-free afternoons, with immediate veterinary contact if cases arise.

Texas farmers push record yields across crops in 1975
The 1975 Texas crop report shows increases in sorghum wheat peanuts soybeans oats and other crops while cotton fell short of earlier projections. Wheat output reached 1 031 000 bushels with cotton at about 2 450 000 bales locals note a rise in per acre yields and a steep rise in sorghum corn and peanut production. Cattle and calf numbers remained high at 16 600 000 on January 1 1975 signaling potential profit pressures ahead.

Whale oil substitutes spark new crops for farmers
Scientists study crambe Limnanthes and jojoba as replacements for sperm oil after the 1971 ban. Field tests suggest crambe may outperform corn or soy in Indiana. meadowfoam offers a liquid wax ester similar to sperm oil, while jojoba matures slowly but shows potential.
