Lee McLane announced the City Democratic Primary to be held Tuesday February 3 with polls from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. The ballot includes Mayor, two Aldermen, City Attorney, Secretary and City Marshal. Nominations close January 12, 1948, with filing fees of $5 for Aldermen and $15 for other offices.
Roger Maddox of Dallas becomes the new manager at the J. C. Penny Company store in Cameron. He arrives after 13 years with Penny, succeeds J. M. Boehner who moves to Tyler, and plans to oversee a modernization including a new 100 foot front on Main Street. Maddox, a native of Concho County Texas, will relocate his wife Mrs. Maddox and sons John and Don to Cameron once a home is found.
Battery C 239th Field Artillery Battalion distributed 758.51 dollars in National Guard service pay during last Tuesday's drill at the armory. Captain Rudolph Michalka noted the amount was a 50 percent rise from the prior payroll and that full enlistment strength would bring even higher pay. soldiers also received typhoid tetanus and smallpox vaccines. The drill marked the last 1947 session, with the next training set for the first Monday evening in 1948.
J M Boehner, manager of the J C Penny Co Cameron store, is promoted and will move to Tyler to manage the larger Tyler store. He expresses regret at leaving Cameron but accepts the promotion. Tyler population is about 45 000 and a new Cameron Penny Store project was planned nearby.
E O Harrell, minister at First Presbyterian Church Cameron, departs Tuesday for new work with Livingston Church. He led the Cameron church for two years and was active in civic life as Rotary Club member and secretary of the Ministers Association. Mrs Harrell will aid in church and social work at Livingston.
Mr and Mrs M G Cox donated a Hammond organ to the First Baptist Church in Cameron. Pastor Rev L L Morriss announced the gift in The Messenger. The organ was ordered months ago and delivery was expected in January 1948.
Sheriff Carl C. Black reports Walter Smith an Army deserter was arrested in McAllister Oklahoma and turned over to federal officers. Smith had stolen a 1941 Dodge in San Antonio abandoned it in Rockdale then took a 1946 Chevrolet belonging to F F Koehler driving it to McAllister.
Burkes-Howard Company will host a family party Monday January 5 in Yee High School auditorium open to all with families. The event promises a top stage show and is billed as among the nation’s best entertainments of its kind. The firm is completing a new showroom at North Fannin and Highway 77 and will announce the opening date.
August Gurecky, cashier at First National Bank, has recovered from a serious illness and resumed work after being away for about a week. Friends were concerned during his gravely ill period, but he reports steady strength regain.
Jay Yeadon charged with burglary for the December 23 Texaco Station robbery. Sheriff Carl Black said Yeadon, long employed at the station and now with a concession company, was arrested in Cameron after taking $64 and a revolver, which was later recovered. He had been living in Cameron for some time.
Citizens of Cameron close 1947 with confidence about 1948. They anticipate more consumer goods, steady farming and business opportunities, while remaining wary of economists predicting a downturn. New Year celebrations will be cautious yet hopeful with good wishes exchanged.
Robbers battered the Milano school safe early Tuesday and fled with about $200 in cash. Sheriff Carl Black said the door was forced open and pennies were scattered in the office. Fingerprint teams from Austin looked for clues, but none had been found by noon.
Cold front delayed and may arrive late Wednesday or Thursday. Spring like weather expected for 48 hours with rain and colder conditions dominating New Year’s Day. Fort Worth had seen the front touch, but Central Texas awaits uncertain arrival notes as bowl games draw fans to Dallas and New Orleans, many preferring radio over in person attendance.
V. R. Schmidt, veteran engineer with the State Highway department, is in Cameron to finalize plans for two new bridges on farm to market routes. One will span the San Gabriel River for the Rockdale and Tracy road, the other at San Gabriel for the Thorndale road. The old Little River bridge in Cameron will supply the steel span for the Tracy road bridge, and another bridge will be placed at San Gabriel. Schmidt has overseen major state bridge projects, including a Red River bridge longer than the Cameron span.
Funeral services for Mrs. Moxie Bauknight 70 a Cameron native were held December 24 at Marek Burns Funeral Home Cameron. She died December 23 in Galveston after a heart attack ten days earlier. Survived by son Dr James M Bauknight and daughter Mrs Moxie Bergerson, plus four grandchildren. Interment Oak Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers included H H Stedman and W O Newton.
Drury Lane, president of the Pepsi-Cola Bottling Company of Caldwell, announced the Treasure Top contest offering 203725 dollars in cash prizes starting Sunday January 4. Lane declares the United States has never seen anything like it.
Ex-Gov Coke Stevenson announced on New Year's Day in Austin that he intends to seek the Democratic nomination for United States Senate in the coming summer primaries. He said his bid rests on core governance principles and his record, not a detailed platform.
Edward Sexton a Rockdale native is the new manager of the Haley Dry Goods store in Cameron. He arrived late last week to take over duties after previously managing the Rockdale Haley store. Sexton plans to rent or later buy a home, with his wife and two daughters Sherlyn Sue and Darline joining him in Cameron as housing allows.
