Cameron County Chamber of Commerce announces the 1974 McCullin Civic Award will be its last. The silver cup, first given in 1950, has honored 24 prior recipients. A committee will explore a new award, while nominations continue for the 1974 presentation.
A 11 45 a m crash on N Fannin involving Mrs Maxie Morgan and Dean Albright caused injuries to Morgan and her daughter Holly. Morgan suffered a broken collarbone and Holly a head cut. both were treated at St Edward Hospital and released. Albright was uninjured.
Rosebud schedules city elections for April 5 at the D Brown Library and Rosebud Lott school board vote the same day. Incumbents Mayor Clarence Wolf Councilman R J Brannon seek re election while Howard P Linn runs for the second council seat. Absentee voting March 17 through April 3 at city hall. Filing deadline March 5. Polls 8 am to 7 pm with local election judges and clerks named.
Cameron Volunteer Fire Department has started a fund to aid Edward Dohnalik and his gravely ill wife Janice at 1501 N Davis in Cameron. Donations may be given to any volunteer or deposited with Citizens National Bank or First National Bank in Cameron which will administer the accounts.
Cameron residents in the north will gain sewer hookups after a council vote authorizing extension. Alvin Hefft said materials cost about 4400 dollars, funded from revenue sharing. Gas rates are expected to rise as Lone Star Gas plans a higher city gate rate. the 4th Street reconstruction resolution narrowly failed and was later approved unanimously.
William Kelm will take office as new Chamber president on March 1 with officers and directors elected. The annual banquet is set for Thursday March 20. Joe Griffith will speak. Bill McCutchen and LaVert McKinney named top officers. new and appointed directors announced. committee chairmen listed. city projects and council actions discussed.
Five instructional sessions will teach Ada Henderson and Ben Milam elementary students to operate the pedestrian light at 4th and Fannin. George Biroski of the Texas Highway Department will lead the programs for first through fifth graders across three Ada Henderson and two Ben Milam sessions.
Rep. Dan Kubiak filed a formal request for an investigation into General Telephone's rating practices in Texas. He cites attempts to concentrate rate increases in rural areas and cites Thorndale's rejected rate hike followed by a court injunction. He urges scrutiny of rate setting and tax valuation procedures to prevent abuse.
