Fort Hood Soldier Dies In US 77 One Car Crash

Julius John Petrash twenty from Wharton was found dead in his late model Chevrolet after leaving the highway seven miles south of Cameron on US 77. He suffered head injuries and facial wounds and was pronounced dead at 6 a.m. at a local hospital. Petrash belonged to Headquarters Company 2nd Battalion 1st Armor at Fort Hood. His body was taken to Gommert Funeral Home in Rogers pending services in Wharton.

Cameron Scout Troop 52 packed tents and supplies in a Hornung Bros truck for a weekend at a rugged 100 acre camp on the Fort Hood reservation. The trip included an open air chapel dedication with army engineers, a helicopter landing, and a 3 star general. The scouts work on merit badges, plan community cleanups, and run a peanut selling fundraiser to buy new tents, while evenings include Protestant services and a Catholic field mass.

Cameron School Board Sets Election for Two Trustees

Cameron School Board met Thursday night to set March 5 filing deadline for two trustee seats, extend contracts to 1971 for three principals, and amend policy to cover student drug use. High bid to demolish Ben Arnold School House was accepted. Peggy Dyer hired for first grade. Judy Todd hired for Yee High English. Law Officers School Extended To March 5

The traffic school for area police officers runs Mondays and Wednesdays from 4 to 5 p.m. at Cameron City Hall with two new courses on directing traffic and drivers licenses. The extended closing date is March 5, replacing the previous February 26 deadline.

Contract Set For Widening Brushy

A March start follows the award of a 191 915.86 bid to McKnight and Little Contracting Company of Westfield for three miles of Lower Brushy Creek widening. The project, extending into Williamson County, clears and enlarges the channel to support flood-control dams and reduce riverine flooding in Milam and adjacent areas.

James B Newton Dies Former Rockdale Mayor

James Boswell Newton 59 former mayor of Rockdale died after a six week illness in a Galveston hospital. He was a Rockdale High School alumnus attended Texas A M College and the University of Texas. Survived by wife Dorothea Phillips a son James B Newton Jr and a daughter Eleanor Ann Junk with brothers Charles T Newton and Col Frederick C Newton. Health Department zoning study eyed to spur urban renewal

Mayor E A Perrin announced a two year zoning plan study in partnership with the Texas Health Department to clear the way for HUD urban renewal funds. Eugene Smitherman leads the zoning committee updating the 1966 plan, with Walter Albritton & Associates handling the engineering work.

H H Hartsfield aged 86 died Friday night after a long illness in a local hospital. A Maysfield resident born in Milam County in 1882 he was a retired farmer and a member of Little River Baptist Church and the Masonic Lodge. Funeral services were Sunday at 2 30 p m at Little River Baptist Church with Rev. Ben Curtis officiating and Masonic graveside services at Little River Cemetery. Surviving nieces and nephews. Green's Funeral Home in charge.
