State cigarette tax hike to fund hospitals and schools
The Texas House approved a penny-a-pack cigarette tax increase 112 to 27 to finance hospitals and special schools. The seven year measure would lift the tax from 3 to 4 cents per pack, targeting 7 to 8 million dollars annually. Five million would fund construction, the rest operating funds. a Bergman amendment limited annual revenue for building to 5 million dollars. The bill moves to the Senate.
