Two New Aldermen Nominated Tuesday in City Race

Democrats nominated two new members for the board of aldermen, B. Slocomb former City Marshal and Fred Jackson ice and cold storage operator. Sam McDermott was the sole incumbent re nominated leading the ticket with 211 votes as 244 votes were cast and Roy Baskin was elected Chairman of the Democratic Executive Committee.

Milam County OKs Seventh Grade Uniform Exams

Milam County School Board approves uniform examinations for seventh graders in rural districts and directs the county superintendent to withhold final voucher approval until reports are filed. The February 6 meeting, chaired by Thomas A. Fisher, endorsed the plan, with exams sent to teachers this week and continuing through Friday. The board also reinsured school bond funds and appointed several trustees across the county.

Homer Peel Signs Up Contract With Giants

New York Giants today signed rookie outfielder Homer Peel from Cameron Texas. Peel was drafted from Houston of the Texas league last fall and batted .837 last season. The team still needs signatures from four players none of them regulars Len Koenecke Sam Leslie Fritz Lieber and Hal Schumacher.

Cameron and Yarrellton split county class titles

In a Saturday night game Yarrellton led Cameron 20 to 11. The prior Thursday Cameron defeated Yarrellton 30 to 14. Cameron wins Class A division county title, Yarrellton wins rural division, Buckholts takes Class B title.

Fort Donelson Surrender Marks 1862 Civil War Turning Point

On February 16 1862 Fort Donelson capitulated to Union forces led by General Ulysses S Grant ending a key Confederate stronghold in Tennessee. The surrender opened the river and opened a path for Union advances into the South.

The Edwin Hardy Post No 9 American Legion wrapped up its membership drive with an oyster feed on Friday night February 10. The Army team won the drive for the first time, bringing total Post membership to 200. Carl Nesbitt outlined the legislative program while visiting Legionnaires spoke on membership. The Post now ranks fifth in Texas among more than four hundred posts.

Milam Falls in New 20th Judicial District

Milam and Falls counties are set to form the new 20th judicial district. A Milam County Bar Committee told the legislative redistricting committee in Austin that four districts would be created from Falls and Milam to constitute the 20th. The Milam County judgeship will remain for the present term.

1932 Car Crash Here Brings Suit in Court

Suit filed by J. C. Freeman of Mays Field against G. A. Rankin of Cameron traveling salesman seeks $600 damages from an automobile crash in Cameron in March 1982. Tyson Freeman, son of J. C. Freeman, drove the Freeman car with two young women injured. the accident happened near the Baptist church intersection. Jury waived by both sides. trial before Judge Graham Gillis in District Court.

Large Milam land owners receive $63,500 in regional loans

Loans totaling $63,500 to ten large Milam County land owners and stockmen were approved by John B. Henderson of Milam County Abstract Company. The Regional Agricultural Corporation, separate from small-farmer crop loans, will fund these loans with Raymond Beard as regional loan appraiser. Eligible owners may borrow $1000 or more secured by twice the loan amount.

Wedding Celebration Ends in Fatal Shooting

Hisidor Martinez is jailed for the fatal shooting of Marsilino Saceada during a Sunday morning celebration near Maysfield on the Ya ger farm. The home party turned violent as several Mexican guests, allegedly intoxicated, fought. Blas Equivel remains in serious condition and Sam Hernandez was injured. Martinez faces murder charges with a $5,000 bond set after an examining trial.

A Davis Dies At Olney Home

J C Davis died at his son Ray E Dav is near Magargel Texas after a three week illness from flu complications. He was born June 17 1865 near Tracy and was a longtime Methodist. Surviving children include M M Campbell Dallas G S Kolius San Antonio Ray E Davis Megargel and Ross Davis Archer City. He was married twice first to Amnie Sheeckles in 1884 and then to Misa Cloma Daniels about three years ago. Active pallbearers were Jeff Kemp P S Graves W G Pills L G Roberts Roy Law and B L Bailey.
