A note from R. D. Brown of Cameron Texas to President Hoover dated February 5 1950 describes sending two fishing flies. The president replies that Congressman Johnson delivered the flies and that he will enjoy experimenting with them.
The excerpt notes President Hoover on a ten day fishing trip off Florida who received two hand crafted flies from R. D. Brown of Cameron. Luther Johnson was asked to deliver the flies from Brown, who also makes artificial baits. A letter from Hoover to Brown expresses willingness to test the flies in Southern waters.
Eight churches in a community drive report 804 Sunday school attendees last Sunday, with a goal of 1760 by Easter. Baptist church leads with 349, Methodist up to 288, Presbyterian 90, Christian 58, Church of Christ 41, and others rising. Buttons for the campaign ordered to boost visibility.
Last Tuesday suits and equipment were issued to the baseball candidates. A large squad reports and Mr. Strickland expects a good team from the wealth of material. Practice is held each afternoon as they prepare for a record year and seek games through discussions with other schools.
At noon on March 5 a helper for the internal revenue collector will be present at the Milam county courthouse to assist taxpayers with income tax matters.
Dr. Robert F. Gribble of the Presbyterian faculty in Austin will preach at both the morning and evening services Sunday at the Cameron church.
H. E. Garner told the Commercial Club that free mail service depends on naming streets and numbering houses. The Civic Improvement Committee will consider the matter and may bring it before the City Council. The issue has been urged for years with no action yet.
Skeezix hosts a big Saturday dance on February 15 with a splendid program of dance music. Management promises a good time for dancers and a large crowd is expected for the mid February event.
Chas. Zidell of the New St. Louis store returned from Houston where he attended the convention of shoe manufacturers. He purchased a large stock for spring and summer and the new goods will arrive in Cameron within a few days.
Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Tapp and son and Mr. and Mrs. George Randall with two children were Sunday guests of Mrs. Frank Monroe.
A Cameron Texas editorial urges the city to publish a full financial statement as required by Article 1023 of the Revised Statutes. It argues taxpayers deserve transparency on receipts expenditures treasury condition and fund sources and stresses publicity in public business as public safety.
Taylor Press reports drilling equipment moved into two locations near the discovery well at Seonyers-Wilson about 2500 feet northeast and at the Simms site. Jim Kemp, contractor for both, expects spudding within days. five more derricks completed and a sixth started nearby. Anderson of Ft Worth has entered the Chapman field with a 20 acre purchase for 11 500, aiming to drill extensively in Williamson county.
Four Yee High School class presidents select their Stunt Night order Juniors Seniors Sophomores and Freshmen for the Friday February 14 program in the school auditorium. Adults pay fifty cents and children twenty five cents. Each ticket holder votes for the best stunt with ballots collected and counted at show end.
A dance at New National Hall in Cameron is announced for Thursday February 20 with music by Jamie Clark. The management expects a large crowd for the entertainment.
Mrs Laura Williams has returned to Cameron after a visit with relatives in Corpus Christi and Kenedy.
Milam County will hold a boys basketball tournament at Yee High School on Saturday February 15 starting at 10 am. The county champion advances to the district tournament in Waco on February 22. Admission is 15 and 26 cents. Seven schools enter: Thorndale Milam Ockdale Gause Sharpe Buckholts and Yarrelton.
Chief Justice W S Fly of the 4th court of civil appeals suspended Judge R B Minors injunction blocking the Texas rural aid appropriation of 5 000 000. The state board of education can now spend the funds restoring rural aid schools including Milam county.
Cameron dairy officials urge a milk production push to supply the Cheese Plant. Minutes from the Commercial Club report campaign to educate farmers, praise for new manager Kirk, and a plan to invite business leaders to tour the plant to boost milk supplies.
A Methodist church invites the public to Sunday services. The morning sermon is Saints in Action and at 7 30 pm The Tragedy of an Entangled Faith. Sunday school begins 9 45 am Epworth Guilds at 6 30 pm. Last Sunday drew large crowds.
Leroy Johnson of Fort Worth spent Wednesday in Cameron visiting his parents Mr. and Mrs. M. M. Johnson. He is a Santa Fe special officer who has been in Galveston with other officers examining thefts from Santa Fe railroad cars.
