Confederate hears from boy in Germany after war letters

First Lieutenant Lloyd Mitchell of the 357th Infantry writes to Captain J. J. Irwin in Cameron Texas recounting his experiences on the St Mihiel and Argonne Meuse fronts in France. He describes raids on the Hindenburg line, prisoners, an anti tank gun capture, and the cease firing order while crossing into Luxembourg and into the Kaiser's land.

Black Billy Sunday Coming to Cameron

Reverend Gordon McPherson known as Slack Billy Sunday will lead a 15 day revival in Cameron starting Sunday March 9 aimed at the colored population. The effort is led by Cameron Grove Baptist Church with support from white ministers and citizens.

Delegates Elected for W O W State Convention

Cameron Woodmen of the World and Woodmen Circle members chose delegates to the W O W and W C State Convention set for April 8 in Dallas. W O W named W G Gillis and W T Yates as delegates with A N Weems and B M Siebel as alternates. Circle designated Mrs T A Howell as delegate and Mrs S Kestenbaum as alternate.

Judge Watson Named Special Judge for Jones Printing Case

Judge John Watson of this city, a district judge in the Twentieth Judicial District, is designated by Gov. Hobby to preside in the Twenty sixth Judicial District in Travis county over Ben C. Jones & Company versus the State Printing Company et al. The trial date is not yet set. Judge Ireland Graves will handle proceedings in Cameron due to Graves’s disqualification.

Miss Lala Myers plans Cameron's newest fashions as she travels to eastern markets. She aims to send only models of the latest creations to Cameron this season. In her absence Miss Emily Spillar oversees the shop preparing for daily arrivals. Mr. and Mrs. Jim Aiken visit the A. J. Aiken home as he leaves the army and travels toward Louisiana.

Milam County to Cut Cotton Acreage by 33 1 3 Percent

Milam County plans to reduce cotton acreage by one third as part of a statewide pledge program. A February 22 pledge day, under Governor Hobby, will urge farmers to sign agreements to cut plantings. The effort, led by the Council of Defense, aims to stabilize prices amid war-time inflation and a looming surplus.

Banks and Cameron boys form pig club hog gift program

The Cameron Commercial Club and Cameron banks organize Boy Pig Clubs for ages 10 to 18 in Cameron trade territory. Banks will assist in purchasing Poland China gilts at cost or on 12 month terms, secured by the buyer’s note. Gilts inoculated for cholera and bred to a registered male, costing $35 to $40 delivered. Applications through banks or Mr. Banzhaf, first come first served, shipments when carload ready.

Personal Injury Suit Settled in Cameron District Court

The personal injury suit of J B Wilson against I G N Railway was settled yesterday in the Twentieth District Court at Cameron for 7500 dollars pending railroad authorities approval. Original demand was 35000 dollars. Wilson, of Thorndale, was injured March 2, 1918, when his car was struck at a main crossing by a train. He suffered a broken thigh and left arm and remains with a stiff left arm and nearly useless fingers.

Cameron Commercial Club Holds Strong Meeting On Roads

A well attended Cameron Commercial Club meeting in the District Court room discussed progress and good roads. Attorney W W Chambers reported Buckholts residents ready for a bond issue while County Auditor Giles L Arriett said State Highway Commission designated two Milam County connecting roads with state funding and citizen contributions both planned. Milam County bond issues indicate broad road improvements ahead.

Woodmen Team Aims for Big State Honors

After World War II ended the Woodmen of the World team resumes work to restore Cameron’s team as one of the best in the state. A drill session was held last Thursday night with officers Roy Weems captain J D Robinson first sergeant August Horstmann quartermaster and unnamed lower officers. The state camp is expected to be held this July with location to be decided.

Hurst Murder Trial Set for Wednesday in Cameron

The district court at Cameron will hear the murder case of B. F. Hurst and his son charged with killing Wesley Whitely, son-in-law to the elder Hurst, with a shotgun last summer east of Gause. Witnesses include Whitely’s wife, the Hurst spouses, and their children.

Rockdale Couple Wed in Cameron Parlor Ceremony

Edwin L. Snively and Miss Eula Shappard of Rockdale married Monday at 3 p.m. in the parlor of the Methodist parsonage in Cameron. The ceremony was performed by Rev. W. G. Harbin and the couple will reside in Rockdale.
