Cameron public library officials and local groups move toward building or improving facilities at a new site. The Cameron City Council has set aside park land on Fourth Street for a library, and the old GI Building is being considered for transfer to the city. William Peace, acting state librarian, will discuss building plans and funding options at a meeting February 16.
James Evans Davis a Brady youth and Texas A M student was indicted for murder without malice in Johnny Horton death. Davis posted $2 500 bond in Milam District Court after a crash near Milano on November 5 that killed Horton and injured others. The Feb grand jury returned 17 indictments including theft burglary assaults and a hot check case. Horton known for Battle of New Orleans, his Cadillac was wrecked and brought to Cameron drawing hundreds of observers.
Charlie Burke elected president of Cameron Country Club with Dr. George Bowman as vice president and a new slate of officers. The 1961 directors include Dr. C. G. Swift Henry Liebman Lee Marek and others. Committees cover Greens Tournaments House Activities Swimming Pool Lake and Membership with varied chairmen and members.
Funeral services for Mrs. Lucinda Wilson were held at 2 p m Tuesday at the Central Church of Christ with burial in Friendship Cemetery. She died February 5 in San Antonio at age 75. Survivors include daughter Flora Wilson Wyngate and Mrs. Hazel Wilson Davis, two sons William T. Wilson and Joseph Benton Wilson, a brother Henry McCormick, two sisters Rebecca McCormick Countler and Amy McCormick McGregor, eleven grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Cameron CYO sponsors a public record hop at Simon George Hall this Friday February 10 at 7 p.m. James Barta, president, says admission is 25 cents per person.
The Cameron School Board voted to give the present west wing of the old Gi Building to the city to aid library facilities and discussed a new athletic jacket award policy using a 4 2 2 1 point system. The board also approved leasing Milam Institute grounds to the Cameron Little League and accepted low bids for 1961 football equipment.
Newberry will headline Milam Farm Bureau 11th anniversary on February 16 in Cameron. A covered dish supper at 6 p.m. at the First Methodist Fellowship Hall precedes a program by Milam 4-H members and local youths. Newberry’s topic is Policy Development and Policy Execution in Farm Bureau Organization.
Five men pleaded guilty in Milam District Court before District Judge W C Wallace after a rapid grand jury session that yielded 17 indictments. J T Gates admitted burglary at Cameron Safeway and Irving's Dept Store, receiving two concurrent three year terms. Lonceree McGowan got a two year penitentiary sentence for July 1960 auto theft. Oliver Winters, Herbert Lee Schnider and Obhie Seaton Jr pleaded guilty to stealing 800 pounds of pecans from a Rogers barn with two year sentences probated on restitution. James Edgar Perry and Columbus Perry faced related indictments. The barn owner is Stanley Kach. venue was from Bell County. The Milam Grand Jury and county attorney presented the cases to Judge Wallace. first 1961 district criminal court session.
The Tejas District Scout Show Scout-O-Rama will be at Cameron National Guard Armory on March 11 with R R Sugg as district chair man Judge W C Wallace leading camping activities and Alfred Kallus as chairman Co chair Charlie Burke assists a full committee handles attendance participation finance and publicity Scouts start selling tickets February 15 with proceeds funding Camp Tahuaya Boy Scout Camp near Belton on the Lampasas River for maintenance and improvements
The Cameron Bowling Association will host its first annual tournament on February 11-12 and 18-19 at Cameron Bowling Lanes. The event features team doubles singles and All-Events contests for men from the Tri City and Maple leagues. Contact Henry Schattle or the lanes manager Doc Speer to participate.
Cameron Library board studied Rosebud facilities and set a meeting with a Texas official for Cameron's new library. The Cameron School Board voted to give the current library wing to the city and the east side of E Fourth St park was set for a library site. The library has 2771 books with 214 added in 1960 including 75 children’s titles. Funds total $639.42 as of January 1, donated by North Milam United Fund and others. 139 books were donated last year. Current hours are 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. Saturday. Board members present were Dr. George Bowman, Judge W. C. Wallace, Mrs. Triggs, Oxsheer Smith, and Mrs. John B. Henderson. Librarian is Mrs. Tom Wardlaw.
City Council approved a city election for April 4 inviting three councilmen and a statewide primary for U S Senator. Library board members urged using the east half of the city park for a library site with two year occupancy and city ownership. Gillette of Temple proposed a 40 foot mausoleum at Oak Hill Cemetery which was tabled for study. Signs will warn trucks not to park along US 77 from Fannin to Travis streets. audit bills totaling about 400 dollars were approved.
The Cameron Volunteer Fire Department answered two calls in the past week both on Friday and out of town. A grass fire on the George Fisher farm on the Milano Highway was controlled before damage occurred. Later that evening a butane tank fire at the Ernest Dodd farm destroyed a pickup and damaged two tractor tires.
Seven Walkers Creek residents and neighbors killed 97 rattlesnakes in one week near the H. H. Chamberlain farm in Walkers Creek Milam County total rattlers this period surpasses 500. The method used involved a garden hose to inject gasoline into the den and snakes were then captured and killed. Participating were A. L. Kennon Charlie Roschetzky Jess Hickman L. C. Boyd David Krenel Luther Todd and Chamberlain.
Funeral services for J. Duncan Williams were held Tuesday in Melbourne Florida. He died following a heart attack at his home Thursday. Williams was born at Duncan now in the Sharp community. Survivors include wife four sons a daughter a sister Mrs Hicks Garner of Sharp.
