West to Speak at Annual MFB Convention in Cameron

Four Bell County men charged with hot check forgery

Weldon Shaefer 30 Marvin Baker 37 Alan Davis 15 and Bobby Joe Gentile 18 were jailed in Milam County after Sheriff Carl Black arrested them on check forgery charges. The suspects allegedly passed $82 forged checks bearing W C Keith signature at Mendrik's Minimax Wied Hardware Schiller Motors and Bishop Service Station.

Weather notes warm dry period through Cameron region

Official Cameron Water Department figures report a February warm and dry spell with seven day highs around 79 and lows near 2. No rainfall recorded. temperatures fluctuated from the upper 30s to mid 50s with several days in the 40s and 50s.

Prescott reviews 1961 criminal court activity in county

Prescott reviewing 1961 reported 30 District Court and 84 County Court criminal cases. District Court had 28 nonjury and 2 jury trials. County Court processed 71 prosecutions and 13 with dismissals or reduced charges. Four District cases and 25 County cases were pending at year end. Milam Justice of the Peace Courts handled over 1,200 cases with help from the County Attorney. Fees totaled 14232.71 to the county treasury.

February 20 Deadline for Cameron Civic Award Nominations

Council Calls For Vote On Meters In Election

Construction continues at the J. K. Stuart dairy site northwest of Cameron with a 7200 square foot milking parlor taking shape. Steel girders are in place and side panels due for erection as work proceeds on the 10 acre building complex mentioned by manager G. F. Dunston who says the project is about 15 percent complete with calf barns to follow.

Wildcat Well Planned West of Sharp Three Miles

Bartlett operators Cherry and Rickey filed notice to drill No 1 Paul C Graves about three miles west of Sharp in Milam County. The 3000 foot wildcat sits on a 197 acre lease in the R Davidson Survey, with site coordinates near the southeast and southwest lines. Construction includes main milk building, power lines, a 30 acre clearing, and a 100 cow capacity dairy operation planned to start in about 30 days after completion.

FHA promotes W H Gaston to Texas post

William H Gaston formerly Cameron Far mers Home Administration supervisor is named operating loan officer on the Texas FHA director's staff. The Temple based Texas FHA office announced the promotion by state director L J Cappleman. Gaston, a 1948 Texas A M graduate and former B 25 pilot, joined FHA in 1956 and has headed CAMERON operations since 1960.

City officials discuss granting eight feet of street right of way for a new 24 unit motel and restaurant at West Fourth and North Travis Streets with paving and drainage needs. A public vote on parking meters is set for April 3 alongside city elections.

Preston Royal Opens in Downtown Cameron with Ben Hur

The Preston Royal Theatre opened Wednesday in downtown Cameron with a four hour Ben Hur screening through February 12. Workmen completed interior decoration for the compact venue formerly the Milam Theatre which burned in July 1961. Milam District Court officials reported a settlement between owner Robert Scott and Commercial Standard Fire and Marine Co., insurer of Milam Theatre.
