Goose season outlook in Texas faces habitat, policy and migration risks
Texas Parks and Wildlife Department biologists estimate about a million wild geese will winter in Texas, similar to recent years, but habitat loss and coastal land use threaten future populations. They cite nesting habitat decline, grain field ploughing, marsh loss, disease, and weather as major pressures, with hunting focus shifting due to heavy early migrant birds and heavy immature harvest. The season runs through January 22 with dark geese restricted December 15 to 21 east of Highway 81 to reduce pressure.
