Cameron businessmen faced a cautious outlook for 1939 with hopes of modest recovery and wartime stimulus. Farmers expected cotton acreage cuts and price controls, while national war preparations could boost basic industries temporarily. The era’s mood rested on conservatism and cooperation to stabilize the community.
Funeral services for Dudley Fisher 48 of Liberty were held Monday at the Liberty church with Rev. O G Acrey officiating. He died at home Sunday December 18 1938 after an extended illness. He is survived by his mother five sons two daughters three brothers and three sisters with his wife predeceased. Pallbearers included Roy Massengale J H House Jerry Nabours and others. Interment followed in Liberty cemetery.
Milam County Baptist Workers Conference will be hosted by Cameron Mexican Baptist Church with programs at First Baptist. Speakers include Rev. Ben Stohler Rev. E E Crawford Rev. Joseph Underwood and Mr W C Wiese. Dr A C Gettys will deliver the 11 o'clock sermon. Lunch follows the morning sessions.

Mr. and Mrs. J. F. McCorory of Stigler Oklahoma stayed with Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Stafford and Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Eplen during the Christmas holidays.
The census report by special agent Ray ONeill shows 33,463 bales ginned in Milam county before December 13 1938, down from 42,554 bales by the same date in 1937, a decrease of 9,091 bales.
Stanley Swift plans a hang-up midnight show at Cameron Theatre on December 31 featuring Frankenstein and Dracula after Heart of the North. The Cameron-Milam 1938 year ends with Young in Heart and Young Dr Kildare coming soon, plus Prairie Moon with Gene Autry at Milam.
The Knights of Pythias Lodge held a major meeting on December 26 marking the largest class since the lodge’s organization. A class of 28 candidates received the rank of Page and 14 new members were named including B. G. Kennedy Gene Blake R. A. Pleatl Marvin Ethridge Wilson Mode Bill Story Jr L. L. Blaylock C. H. Pollard Gus Ditto John P. Eanes Winford Henderson H. H. Roberts Matt Terry T. J. Vaughan and J.B White. A special session was set for December 30 to confer Page rank on a new large class and those who earned Page last Monday were urged to attend Friday night December 30.
The weekly Christian Science Lesson Sermon on January 1 centers on God as the sole divine being. It cites Isaiah 44 6 Ephesians 4 4 6 and a passage from Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy about seeking real eternal harmony and the kingdom of heaven.
Howard Payne University faculty members visited Cameron to urge placing J. B. White’s over 40 000 Indian flint relics in a new museum at the university as part of its expansion. Dallas Museum of Natural History officials also sought to house the collection, but White preferred keeping it in Cameron with potential city or county display space.
A Legion party at the American Legion Hut Wilson Ledbetter Park on January 2 at 7 30 p m invites Legionnaires and ladies to welcome the New Year in informal attire. Best bib and Tucker attire will incur a fine while games return with new rules. Admission is a Legion membership and a smile.
The article covers a PTA sponsored Christmas social at Minerva School with carols games and a candy breaking. Students under Miss Mayfield Miss Maysell Gibbs and Mrs Lucian Reed perform plays and recitations. Gifts, refreshments, and a Bible contest prize are noted plus a weekend visit from Alvin Bethard.
Marlow church hosts a Christmas tree program sponsored by the school starting at 8 o'clock with all residents invited. The piece lists visits among local families including Agnes Storey, Bill Storey, Delbert Lane Walston, Mildred Walston, Clydelle Walston, Aileen Short, Aunt Fannie Short, and several trips to Waco with Miss Clarke. Families from Athens, Galveston, Temple, and local relatives are noted.

Guests include Mr and Mrs George Goree Mrs Delma Criswell Miss Effie Blanche Lawson Miss Agnes Drizga Miss Theresa Mikeska Miss Olga Krall and many family members with local hosts the Criszells Williams Walschak and Olivers.
Clarkson and family near Rosebud spent Sunday with the Bells. Mrs. Tim Mitchell returns home after a week with Gene Kennedy of Curry. Gene Kennedy and wife welcomed a big boy, first grandchild for Mr. Mitchell. John Matyastik family in Temple. Matyastik brother resting well after Temple hospital operation. Louis Skala and daughters visit Cameron hospital. Annie Mae Mayer and John Matyastik shopped in Temple. Prayer meetings urged at Baptist church Wednesday night. Dockeril family moves to Fort Worth. Lindsay family spends Sunday with Lambert.
Liberty welcomes a son to Mr and Mrs Rubie Wise. Nottley Hilderbrandt’s Houston visit to Alma Hilderbrandt. Edd Robinson of Ben Arnold visits Charley Robinson. Will Miller of Gatesville visiting locals. Mrs John Springer visits daughter A J Hilderbrandt. Dave Bussa of Mexia visits Jack Bussa. Austin Hughes family mentioned in briefing.
Mrs. Pearl Hopper and children visited Ruth Gray in Bailey ville while Dorothy B and Martha Lee Leeke visited Oletta Hopper. Numerous families hosted guests including Barretts Reats McCalls Horstmann Gibbs and Olejniks. Church services are planned for the Yarrellton church on January 2nd and 4th Sundays.
Milam County Association Baptist Workers Conference meets January 2 1939 at the American Baptist Church Cameron. Session begins 10 a m with WMU quarterly business meeting at 1 p m. Mexican Baptist church guests invited as attendance expected to be large.
Regular services on Sunday January 1 1939 will be held at the First Methodist church with morning worship at 11 00 and evening service at 7 30. Epworth League meetings junior choir practice Tuesday and senior choir practice Wednesday. Midweek prayer services each Wednesday. Members urged to attend to start the new year strong.
Stewart Epperson of Lubbock and Bentley Epperson of Jayton visited their father Dr. A. S. Epperson of Cameron for the holidays.
Ben Arnold girls win three games beating Ad Hall 39 to ? Maysfield 31 to 4 and Jones Prairie 40 to 2. Boys lose to Ad Hall 27 to 10 and beat Maysfield 20 to 15. 4 H club adds three members Ruby Sweet Ruth Murff Etoile Mitchell. A community Christmas tree is planned December 25 at the school auditorium.
J C Penney Company employees enjoyed a Monday night dinner at Cafo Cafe dining room. All regular and extra staff participated and drew names to receive gifts from a decorated Christmas tree. Regular workers received Christmas bonus checks from the company.
Mrs Rupert Harkrider of Abilene arrived in Cameron on Wednesday to visit her sister Mrs Jeff J Kemp. She will return home Friday. She was formerly Miss Mary Rogers of Cameron.
The Episcopal Church holds Morning Prayer and a sermon on Sunday January 1 at 9 30 a m. Parishioners are invited to attend the service and worship together.
