1939 May Bring Major World Crisis

Cameron businessmen faced a cautious outlook for 1939 with hopes of modest recovery and wartime stimulus. Farmers expected cotton acreage cuts and price controls, while national war preparations could boost basic industries temporarily. The era’s mood rested on conservatism and cooperation to stabilize the community.

Dudley Fisher buried in Liberty after long illness

Funeral services for Dudley Fisher 48 of Liberty were held Monday at the Liberty church with Rev. O G Acrey officiating. He died at home Sunday December 18 1938 after an extended illness. He is survived by his mother five sons two daughters three brothers and three sisters with his wife predeceased. Pallbearers included Roy Massengale J H House Jerry Nabours and others. Interment followed in Liberty cemetery.

Workers Conference Guests of Mexican Church on Monday

Milam County Baptist Workers Conference will be hosted by Cameron Mexican Baptist Church with programs at First Baptist. Speakers include Rev. Ben Stohler Rev. E E Crawford Rev. Joseph Underwood and Mr W C Wiese. Dr A C Gettys will deliver the 11 o'clock sermon. Lunch follows the morning sessions.

Milam County Cotton Ginned Down from 1937 Levels

The census report by special agent Ray ONeill shows 33,463 bales ginned in Milam county before December 13 1938, down from 42,554 bales by the same date in 1937, a decrease of 9,091 bales.

Screen Show Ends Old Year at Cameron Milam Theatres

Stanley Swift plans a hang-up midnight show at Cameron Theatre on December 31 featuring Frankenstein and Dracula after Heart of the North. The Cameron-Milam 1938 year ends with Young in Heart and Young Dr Kildare coming soon, plus Prairie Moon with Gene Autry at Milam.

Knights of Pythias Initiate Largest Class

The Knights of Pythias Lodge held a major meeting on December 26 marking the largest class since the lodge’s organization. A class of 28 candidates received the rank of Page and 14 new members were named including B. G. Kennedy Gene Blake R. A. Pleatl Marvin Ethridge Wilson Mode Bill Story Jr L. L. Blaylock C. H. Pollard Gus Ditto John P. Eanes Winford Henderson H. H. Roberts Matt Terry T. J. Vaughan and J.B White. Two Cities Seek Indian Relic Collection for Museums

Howard Payne University faculty members visited Cameron to urge placing J. B. White’s over 40 000 Indian flint relics in a new museum at the university as part of its expansion. Dallas Museum of Natural History officials also sought to house the collection, but White preferred keeping it in Cameron with potential city or county display space.

Legion Men Are Called to Meet The New Year

A Legion party at the American Legion Hut Wilson Ledbetter Park on January 2 at 7 30 p m invites Legionnaires and ladies to welcome the New Year in informal attire. Best bib and Tucker attire will incur a fine while games return with new rules. Admission is a Legion membership and a smile.
