Six Cameron businesses will welcome Milam's first baby of 1968 with gifts for the newborn and the grateful family. The effort marks a local tradition as the community shores up welcome for the new arrival.
Work continued through the holidays on the Cameron teen center Katacomb Club originally scheduled to open before Christmas. Contracted work took longer than anticipated and painting including the floor and awning remains to be done before opening. Contributions to the remodeling fund have been received from Gordon Baskin Delphian Club Coca Cola Bottling Co and Max Shumate. Tables chairs and a pool table are still needed.
Milam County reported a quiet Christmas weekend with no major accidents or violent deaths in the 3-day period. National figures showed 684 traffic deaths nationwide, with Texas logging 53 violent deaths and 44 from traffic incidents. The National Safety Council forecast 460 to 540 motor deaths in the New Year period. Cameron restaurants along highways 36 and 77 served travelers as one closed briefly for restocking. Milam Sheriff Carl Black noted four prisoners remained in the county jail over Christmas, including two awaiting transfer, one serving a 3 day sentence for driving while intoxicated, and one awaiting burglary trial.

Donna Lynn Slavik 11 of Cameron died in a Houston hospital after 11 days there. Funeral services are scheduled 10 am Thursday at St. Monica's Church with Rev. Geiser presiding. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. Rosary was held Wednesday at Marek Burns. She was born October 13, 1956 in Temple and attended Ada Henderson 5th grade. She is survived by her parents and grandparents.
Mrs. McCasland and Rep Milton Schiller filed for the Democratic Primary in May 1968. McCasland, appointed to fill her late husband’s term, will run and seek the general election if unopposed. Schiller, in his third term, filed Wednesday for the three county district of Milam Falls and Robertson. County party chairman Max McClaren listed available nominations and how to file by mail, noting incumbents seeking re election include W C Wallace John B Henderson Jr Carl C Black Walter White Adolph Gresak Albert Timmerman and Mrs McCasland.
Postmaster Narvie L. Caperton announces new mailing rates effective January 7 across categories. First class mail rises to six cents per ounce up to 13 ounces, air mail to ten cents per ounce up to seven ounces, and new rates reduce postage on some parcels while increasing third class two ounce pieces to six cents.
Z N Morrell helped establish Little River Baptist Church at Jones Prairie in 1849 and the Little River Association in Cameron in 1855. A frontier preacher and pioneer, Morrell endured backcountry dangers, traveled with companions including relatives of Andrew Jackson, and later settled near Falls of the Brazos. He preached by calling out on streets and gathering listeners with makeshift benches.
A 1968 forecast warns of varied crises across social economic and political life. Hilliard S. Thomas, Cameron banker, was appointed to the Cameron Independent School District board by the board chaired by Coleman Duncum. The appointment replaces Lane Horstmann who resigned to join Lone Star Gas Co. The move marks the first banker on the CISD board since a 60th Legislature change allowing bank officers to serve on school boards.
