Miss Minnie Stedman Dies. Funeral Set Thursday
Miss Minnie Stedman of 408 East 8th Street died in a local hospital at 1 am Wednesday. Funeral services are set for 3 pm Thursday at Marek Burns Funeral Home with Rev. Ben Pierce officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. She owned and managed the Mamie A. Hefley Agency, later Minnie Stedman Insurance Agency, for 20 years and had been with the agency since 1938. Survives brother Hilliary H. Stedman of Cameron and sister Miss Claudia Stedman of Cameron.

Milam County Native Frank Seibert Dies at 86
Frank J. Seibert, a Milam County resident since 1885 and a longtime farmer, died Sunday in a local rest home at age 86. Born March 16, 1881 in Fayette County, he married Theresa Jekel in 1907. Funeral services were held Tuesday at St. Monica's Catholic Church. burial followed in the church cemetery. He is survived by three sons Adolph, Otto, and Conrad. two daughters Lillian Galler and Ames Spacek. one brother Fritz Seibert. two sisters and seven grandchildren.

New Wildcat Near Buckholts Drilled. Dry Hole Plugged
Milam County drilling last week saw one new wildcat about three and a half miles southeast of Buckholts on the Ernest V. Brod 52 acre tract. W. H. Mahon will drill to 1700 feet targeting the Buda lime. The Coufal No 1 near Buckholts was plugged after reaching Edwards lime with no shows. A second dry hole, Wallace Culpepper No 1 near Cameron off the Rockdale highway, drilled past 2000 feet before plugged and lease rig moved off.

Minerva to US 36 Route Resurfacing Planned
The Texas Highway Commission announced a two year program to reconstruct US 77 from Minerva to SH 36, including a 5.3 mile Milam County section at an estimated $607 million. The plan covers 1,667.6 miles of non Interstate highways and 557 miles of right of way with a 50 50 state local share.

Cameron approves 1 percent city sales tax in Texas vote
Cameron joins seven Texas towns approving a 1 percent city sales and use tax by 399 to 156. E A Perrin led the pro sale tax effort while Mayor Bassel Wilson praised the campaign and press coverage. Other towns voting yes included Mexia Clifton and Temple. Lampasas rejected the tax 791 to 251, spurring a paving plan worth about 1900000.

Milam County Sheriff Carl Black says a spree of early morning burglaries may be solved with the arrest of a 16 year old boy. While en route to school he attempted two West Main entries before dawn and then broke into the Walter Placek home at 395 North Bowie rifling through packages under the Christmas tree. The youth had recently returned from Gatesville.

Family Headstone Cited Hardships in Little River Cemetery
A longstanding family plot in Little River Cemetery near Jones Prairie chronicles frontier hardship. Headstones date to 1854 for Tyson and Lester, with a fourfold stone for Harris and Sarah Mitchell and their kin. Confederate soldier Manson S. Jolly is noted, plus Civil War aftermath stories. The 1849 founding began with Z. N. Morrell’s land grant. the cemetery expanded in 1923 and again after 1947 with added land and upkeep efforts.

Texas Highway Department drivers license office for Milam County opens January 3 in the Veterans Administration building at Main and Central sharing space with VA and Social Security. Office hours are 9 to 12 and 1 to 5 each Wednesday. Expiring licenses after January 1 require a card from Austin taken to Cameron for color photo and vision test.
