The Railroad Commission unanimously approves Texas first surface mining permit under the Surface Mining and Reclamation Act for Alcoa’s Rockdale lignite operation. The 770 acre site spans five years with 28 permit provisions including groundwater monitoring wells and $700 per acre reclamation cost.
Cameron and Rockdale along with Milani County see rate cuts as Southwestern Bell trims multiple line types. Private lines drop from 7 to 4.75 dollars, two party from 5 to 3.15, business from 14.50 to 9.75, eight party from 4.60 to 1.90, and rural business from 10.15 to 2.55. Pay phones and information calls will rise after conversion, with 20 cent information calls after the first 10 monthly.
The Heart Of Texas Council Boy Scouts, a United Way agency, serves about 65 boys in Cameron including a Cub Pack and two troops. Ben E. Campbell notes 39 Cub Pack members with Scoutmasters Ernest Moore and Felix Matula guiding 15 and 11 boys. Camp Tahuaya near Belton and Camp Jim Braley between Waco and Marlin host year round and summer activities.
Alcoa reports a favorable 1975 turn around with higher shipments and profits and forecasts 30 percent 1976 and 8 to 12 percent 1977 shipment growth. Chairman W H Krome George says industry aims for balanced supply demand and stronger pricing while Alcoa maintains large inventories to meet future demand.
