Dr P A Corkern announces a New Year Eve Nightwatch program at the First Baptist Church from 9 to 12. A Life of Saul film will be shown and The Lord's Supper observed amid a city wide set of New Year activities.
Rev Clyde Holtman serves as assistant pastor at St Monica’s Parish in Cameron, started duties three months ago, a St Mary’s Seminary La Porte graduate and Westphalia High School alum. Son of Albert and unnamed Holtman of Westphalia, he previously assisted at St Mary’s Brenham.
The Cameron Yoemen basketball team opened the 1951-52 season December 20 with a doubleheader win at Killeen. The A squad defeated the Kangaroos 43 to 26, led by Bobby Biskup with 15 points and Glenn Rosenberg with 14. The B squad won 25 to 24 in a tight contest, with Richard Wilkerson and Ray Thompson scoring 10 and 8 points respectively.
Milam County Home Demonstration Club hosted a county wide Christmas party at Simonton-George Memorial Hall on Saturday December 15. County officials and 4-H girls attended with Hoyte Walkers Creek and Buckholts Burlington clubs contributing to the program. Mrs. W. E. Boyd of Gay Hill served as mistress of ceremonies as games were played and cake sandwiches and coffee were served after the decorations of cedar holly and a silver Christmas tree.
Mr and Mrs Cotton Bryan are parents of a son born at St Edward Hospital on Sunday December 16 at 11 45 p m The baby weighs seven pounds eight ounces and has been named Doyle Gean The Bryans also have a son W P Bryan Jr sixteen months old Mrs Bryan is the former Lucille Brantley Grandparents are Mr and Mrs Bill Brantley
Contract for Rockdale's dial telephone building awarded to L. J. Ingram and B J Construction of Austin. Work starts Dec 26 with spring completion target. Barnes Jones Lumber supplies material. Western Electric will move in after completion to install dial equipment. cost to expand beyond initial 105000 estimate.
Mr and Mrs Ed Kohutek announce the arrival of a daughter Kathryn Lee at St Edward Hospital on Saturday December 22. The newborn weighed seven pounds twelve ounces. The mother is the former Fay Rummel.
Texas recorded 92 holiday deaths as a four day period ended with 60 traffic fatalities. Gunshots fires drownings and self harm contributed to the toll amid national traffic deaths totaling 486. Officials had expected about 600 deaths during the holidays.
Mrs. W. R. Janke Sr., 71, died December 19 at her Bartlett residence. Funeral services were held December 21 at St John Lutheran Church Bartlett with Rev. Gus Sager officiating. Interment was in Lutheran Cemetery. Survived by husband W R Janke Sr, daughter Mrs Hugo Lange, six sons including Walter Janke, and many relatives.
W T Whatley Sr 72 died in Galveston hospital December 25 1951 after weeks of illness. A Bell County native born Rogers he moved to Cameron in 1924 to run a grocery business with his son W T Whatley Jr. Funeral at 3:00 P M Wednesday at Marek Burns Chapel with Dr P A Corker officiating. Interment Oak Hill Cemetery. Survived by widow Mrs W T Whatley Sr son W T Whatley Jr two daughters Mrs Hi Co Sherrod Jr of Galveston and Mrs A A Somerville of Austin one brother Jack Whatley of Rogers and two grandchildren. Pallbearers listed.
The Wage Stabilization Board adopts amendments to General Wage Regulations 6 and 8 eliminating written reports of adjustments and requiring employers to keep records of wage increases. Revisions to Resolutions 60 63 and 68 remove filing of reports showing amount and calculation methods and replace them with record keeping. Regulation 6 allows up to 10 percent increases since January 15 1950 with no board approval, previously requiring Form 6.A submissions within 10 days.
Ben Kennon is a patient at the Anderson Clinic and Hospital in Houston. He recently received treatment at St. Edward and Scott and White Hospitals. Mrs. Kennon has gone to be with him at Houston Hospital. They own and operate the City Cafe in Santa Fe Town. He will be at the Houston hospital for some time.
Humble Oil Refining Co will air a play by play Cotton Bowl broadcast from Dallas featuring TCU against Kentucky. Ace announcer Kern Tips will describe action with A1ice Cheaser providing halftime color as Kentucky makes its first Cotton Bowl appearance. Broadcast starts 12 46 p m Tuesday on WFAA WBAP 820 Dallas Ft Worth and WOAI San Antonio.
Milam County draft officials announce re examination of men rejected only on mental test by the Induction Station. Re examinations run in addition to regular physicals and do not change IV F classifications until results arrive. About two local men in Milam County fall under this change and may be called for re examination soon.
Mr J D Jinks spent a brief visit in the city last Friday, stopping at local spots and meeting residents during his short stay.
Judges from Rockdale scored fifteen entries on originality arrangement color and lighting in Cameron Home Decoration Contest. First prize $15 awarded to Rev Raymond Helseth South College Ave. Also honored were Mrs James Wiggs Mrs Grady le Milton Schiller Ma B F Robinson and Marie and Lois Horstmann with cash prizes as Cameron chambers commerce junior chamber of commerce and BPW Club sponsored the event funded by local merchants.
Thomas R. Stoebner yeoman seaman apprentice USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Will E. Stoebner of Burlington Texas, serves aboard the ammunition ship USS Rainier in Korean waters. The Rainier arrived in Japan in November and helped supply munitions in World War II campaigns including Midway Coral Sea Tara Wan Kwajalein and Okinawa.
Mr and Mrs Don Humble welcomed a son named Monty Garfield Humble at Newton Memorial Hospital on Thursday December 20 at 9 33 am He weighed seven pounds four ounces The couple also has a four year old son named Mark Grandparents are G L Humble of Cameron and D W Maedgen of Troy Betty Maedgen is the mother’s maiden name Don Humble is the father
In Wilson Jewelers left show window the Lord Elgin watch of renowned history is displayed. It is among the scarce thousand made of this type with unusual design featuring solid gold base and side mountings. The watch uses gold dot indicators with arrows instead of numerals and rests in a sterling case noted as exceptionally beautiful.
The National Citizens Commission for the Public Schools announces a new Southwest regional office at 1104 Main Street Dallas Texas. Clint Pace will head the Dallas office guiding NCCPS activities in Texas Arkansas Oklahoma Louisiana and Kansas. Director Henry Toy Jr notes this is the fifth regional office to promote citizen involvement in public school improvement.
A San Antonio Light clipping notes neighboring towns Gonzales and Cameron praised each other after a recent high school football game. The Gonzales Inquirer and Cameron Herald commended mutual sportsmanship and cordial fan conduct, reflecting grown up rivalry over forgotten feuds.
