In Cameron on Christmas morning the Boy Scouts delivered toys, candy, fruit, and groceries to needy children as Mrs. J. G. West and scout master Joe Denson organized the effort. Helpers spread Christmas cheer, with generous townspeople contributing to a first tree and gifts for the less fortunate.
Washington orders require civil service qualification for carrier positions in Cameron. Only HH. E. Garner on the eligible list has been approved. A January 11, 1919 exam will select two more men, with delivery expected to start by February 4th pending exam results.
After two weeks of dangerous illness following influenza, Fred Irby of Van Horn Texas is reported to be recovering gradually at the Auditorium Hotel where he has been since becoming sick. He is visited by relatives including Co M Cummings Mrs S H Beal a sister Miss Alice Irby and brother R B Irby of
War savings and thrift stamps remain valuable even if not fully filled. Director Lewis B. Franklin warns holders not to cash stamps before maturity, noting each one grows equally in value. He explains thrift cards remain valid and new 1919 stamps will be sold after January 1 with a new certificate format.
James D Baskin son of the late B J Baskin and Mrs Baskin served with the 90th Division in World War I. He began training May 8 1917 at Leon Springs and received his commission August 15 1917. He served at Camp Travis in Co D 857th Infantry later in a machine gun unit, saw action in St Mihiel and other engagements, was gassed but recovered, and as of Armistice day was en route to Berlin as part of the Army of Occupation.
Monday evening at the Methodist church Sunday School staged a three part program. Young children sang and played under Miss Brougher and Mrs Moore. The assembly collected 306.25 for Belgians and Armenians, with other gifts for Cameron’s poor. A Mother Goose play closed the event.
Little River floods the bottom lands on Christmas Day and again Thursday morning, submerging thousands of acres. Roads and bridges suffer. fall crops spared by harvest may delay, while grain and ongoing work face heavy damage and travel remains impossible until waters recede. A Cameron resident notes previous overflows boosted cotton yields where river touched.
The Cameron Herald reports the charity fund for the poor has totaled 139.00 dollars. Donations include 5.00 gifts from multiple local residents and organizations such as United Charities and Cameron Commercial Club. Mrs. W. C. Newton and children visited Ames day with the Jeter family.
Mrs. A. S. Houston travels to El Campo Texas to visit her father and relatives, signaling a family reunion brief in the town.
