Texas Farmers Hope Rain Ends Dry Spell For Wheat Pastures
Texas farmers face a harsh winter as rainfall remains well below normal across the Panhandle Low Plains and northern High Plains. Wheat pastures are lean with only about a third grazing, while the yearling winter grazing in Central Texas holds steady with rainfall needed. The agricultural labor force on Texas farms falls 13 percent from last year, wages rise to 2.26 per hour, and sheep on feed gain 21 percent from last month but are down 16 percent year over year. More than two thirds of cotton harvest is complete, with land prep starting for 1976 crops. A large questionnaire from the Texas Crop and Livestock Reporting Service may be arriving at farms to aid projections.
