First Brazoria county enlistee to join the Navy, cadet J O Hughes, has earned his wings and trains in Pensacola Florida for a challenging naval flying career. He recently visited Cameron at his uncle J O Hughes's home in Milam county and is well known locally.

Leonard Blaylock joined the Bar of the Supreme Court of the United States at noon December 15 1943 after a motion by Solicitor General Charley Fahy and approval by Chief Justice Harlan Stone. He had been a Texas Bar member since 1940, a Baylor University law graduate, and FBI special agent for several years. his wife Marjorie Adams attended.
Hal Tyson of Houston returned home Wednesday after a week visiting his daughter Mrs Harvey Radtke and his sister Mrs Clarence Raymond of Maysfield.
The War Department confirms Second Lt. Wilma T. Caldwell Jr. Air Corps died in action after his B 26 Marauder was shot down. German records via the Red Cross indicate he was killed on 22 August 1943 while serving in the European Theatre. The Caldwell family of Cameron Texas received the notification in October 1945.
Cpl Roland Boedeker of the Alaskan Defense Command serves in the Aleutian Islands since July 1942. Inducted October 1944, he trained at Camp Roberts California and Camp Seeley in the Imperial Valley. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Bill Boedeker of Cameron and was home on furlough last January. Mr and Mrs Will Brown of Roseland moved to a new home in Maysfield. they visited Cameron Wednesday.
Mr and Mrs Ellen Pemberton and family of Temple are in Cameron visiting relatives and friends over the Christmas holidays.
Mr and Mrs Allen Varner of Gause celebrate fifty years of marriage with a public open house Sunday December 26 1943 from 2 to 7 p m at the Warner home in Gause. Guests including members of the original wedding party and friends from Cameron and surrounding counties are invited to congratulate the couple and a fuller account with photos will appear next week in The Herald.

Machinist Mate Alvin G. Plachy entered the United States Navy Seabees on April 27 1943 and was immediately made Machinist Mate Second Class due to prior war plant experience in Dallas. He trained at Camp Perry Virginia and Gulfport Mississippi before a two month technical course and transfer to California then the South Pacific. He is the son of Mr and Mrs F J Plachy of Cameron and a Yee High School graduate of 1939. His brother Sgt Frank Plachy Jr serves in the Army Air Corps as an Engineer gunner in Pueblo Colorado.
Hershel B. Monroe of San Antonio with the Seabees returns from 11 months on Guadalcanal carrying a Japanese rifle and native war club among the souvenirs. He serves as water tender second class with the Fighting 14th Sea Bees Battalion and has 18 months in service with 15 months overseas. Monroe, visiting Cameron, is married to Maurie Dun cum, sister of Coleman Duncum. The Guadalcanal invasion occurred November 4, 1942. Monroe arrived in San Francisco December 11 and holds three service ribbons with campaign stars plus a Presidential citation.
