The Milam Herald announces a shift to a semi weekly edition with broader coverage and clearer pictures. It plans faster conversion by January and introduces color options in print and advertising, aiming to keep readers and investors engaged.
The Compctor Herald plans an offset press move by January 1 to a four page press, aiming to improve pictures and overall production. The change follows ten years of modernization including computerized typesetting and will keep letterpress for job printing. The paper became semi weekly on November 1 and will continue to use offset equipment already in use on the job side.
Army Pte Albert L. Bell 23 of Cameron reported killed in action in Vietnam. He is the sixth Milan County man to die in the conflict, with his family struck by multiple tragedies including the deaths of his parents and a fatal fire. Bell, born in Cameron, served since February 26, 1968, and is survived by his wife Lauverne Colbert and son Justin Lee Hashun Bell, plus four sisters and four brothers. Funeral arrangements pending return from the war zone.
Cameron churches announce Christmas observances with Cantata by Junior and Primary Choirs at First Baptist on Sunday night. Abiding Savior Lutheran hosts Christmas Eve service at 6 30 p m. St Monica’s Catholic presents carols before Midnight Mass and 11 30 p m choir. Christmas Day services at St Monica’s are at 6 8 and 10 a m. All Saints Episcopal joins St Thomas Rockdale for combined Christmas Eve and Midnight services in Rockdale.
Children from Ada Henderson and about 400 students will sing Christmas carols in a 30 minute program starting at 6 30 pm on the Milam Courthouse lawn weather permitting The Yee High Band will perform a Marches and Christmas music set with audience carol singing Admission to the later Yoe Band concert at the high school gym is 1 for adults and 25 cents for children
Cameron City Council approved purchasing liability insurance for tort claims under the new Tort Claims Act. The plan, discussed with Jim Camp and Ed Magre, would cost about 4 000 to 5 000 dollars yearly, funded from the city budget. Remaining budget concerns include emergency fire truck insurance and a new patrolman at 4 886 yearly, with bids on fuel and a projector for city use also reviewed.
Yicarne voters rejected a 395000 bond issue to enlarge and alter schools in the city. The measure would have added a high school classroom wing a vocational agriculture building a new gym and a cafeteria with taxes rising about two percent to retire the bonds over 29 years.
