Cameron merchants prepared for a strong Christmas week as stocks were ample and shoppers expected to boost retail sales. Agricultural restrictions hurt some sectors, but returning students and festive activities, including a December 22 Christmas tree by the Chamber of Commerce, highlighted a city-wide holiday spirit.
Harry Hughes, Yeomen 1938 half back, won Cameron Theatre athletic scholarship after a student vote. Hughes, a senior, will graduate June 1939 and plans to attend Southern Methodist University. The award followed a Tuesday banquet honoring the football squad where eighteen sweaters were presented and Coach L C Wood and assistants received cash gifts.
Cameron Chevrolet dealer R. G. Grabein visits Houston for a banquet at the Rice Hotel where Felix Douring of Chevrolet Motor Company is to be honored. Grabein plans to return to Cameron on Friday and has been invited to Houston several times this year to discuss plans for the Houston zone.
Milam county prepares a community Christmas tree on the court house lawn funded by the City of Cameron and local clubs. Aimed at children under 12, 500 bags will be distributed during Thursday night’s event on December 22 as part of the festive program.
Cameron Theatre to host a midnight charity screening on December 21 at 11 p m. The film You are Only Young Once stars Louis Stone and Mickey Rooney and proceeds go wholly to the Child Welfare fund. A prior Andy Hardy film by Rooney is remembered by locals.
Santa Claus arrives at Citizens National Bank amid a snowy hill backdrop and a sleigh loaded with toys. The annual Yuletide decorations honor bank president Oxsheer Smith and florist Glass the Florist, drawing visitors from across the state to admire the festive scene and its artistic display.
Stewart's Grocery in Cameron announces a major Christmas sale running through Christmas Eve. The store shelves are stocked with new merchandise for the buying week and prices will be uniformly low. This is the last message before the new year with emphasis on quality and price.
Whatley's Grocery in Cameron announces pre Christmas sale with large stock of merchandise. Store decorated and stocked with special foods for Christmas business. Sale runs through Christmas Day, stressing quality merchandise. W. T. Whatley Jr supervises while W. T. Whatley Sr. is away deer hunting on the Texas border.
Dan Tyson, Cameron city secretary and treasurer, told Cameron Rotary Club that a financial firm regards Cameron as Texas’ best credit risk due to low bonded debt and high taxable values. He read the assessment to Rotarians and praised their club’s service.
The K of P K of C and Masonic Lodges with the American Legion and Lions Club gather fruit candy new clothing and toys for a gift list. The note requests about seventy five new dressed dolls for girls and asks the reader to buy one or two dolls and deliver to Mrs Copus Specialty Shop for pickup.
Milam county voters approve government marketing quotas with 1509 in favor and 339 against, a decisive result despite opposition. County farm income for 1939 expected near 1938 levels, with government benefits under $400,000.
Miss Katherine Wilson, a Baylor College graduate and former McGregor schoolteacher, will succeed Miss Ada Mae Hinman as assistant home demonstration agent in Cameron and arrive next week.
Renewal of about 3000 beer licenses and wine and beer retailer permits expires December 31 1938. Licensees must obtain renewal licenses before January 1 1939 to lawfully operate. Applications may be filed within 30 days prior at Bill Alex Bonds Milam county tax assessor and collector.

Hr. F. Gohmert of Gohmert's Variety Store has been ill at home for a week and is improving, according to friends.
The Grove Tourist Park on highway 77 north of Cameron opens with modern cabins, fine furniture, and hot and cold water. Built by Cameron pioneer Jack Owings, who also pioneered the first drive in line station in Cameron, the camp aims to attract summer tourist trade and promote community development.
Engineer W D Bigbee of Milam County resigns effective immediately to join the United States government. He will work on the Possum Kingdom Dam project near Mineral Wells as part of the federal effort.
