Jaws From Laetolis Push Back Human Lineage
Fossil jaws and teeth from at least 11 individuals at Laetolis in Tanzania date 3.35 to 3.75 million years old. Dr. Mary Leakey and colleagues report remains likely of genus Homo, linking to earlier skulls and suggesting Australopithecus was not direct forebear. Potassium-argon dating confirms deposits are much older than previously thought, supporting an extended early human lineage.
