Santa Parade in Cameron Sets Attendance Record

Crowds in Cameron topped previous peaks for the Santa Parade with about 8 000 people attending and Santa distributing 1 000 candy bags, the most in the city’s parade history. Officials call it a near perfect event with ideal timing and weather.

Milam County to vote on upland cotton quotas December 12

Milam County voters will decide the 1962 upland cotton marketing quotas on December 12. Milam’s allotment totals 56 161 acres from the national 18 101 718 acre pool with 56 107 distributed locally. If 23 of voters approve quotas, price support stays at full level. if 1 3 oppose, price support drops to 50 percent parity. All upland cotton farmers in 1961 are eligible to vote, with voting place list on page nine.

The past week saw highs near 79 and lows around 38 degrees. November rainfall totaled 1.99 inches.

Cameron Public Library Sees Book Checkouts Rise After Move

The Cameron Public Library reports doubled book checkouts in the last two weeks of November after moving to 112 EF First St. from mid month to month. Total November checkouts reached 95 in 1961, up from 66 in 1960 and 41 in 1959 and 1956, with rural residents and Yee High School students assisting in the move and accessing the new facilities.

Tejas Scouts Host Recognition Dinner in Cameron

A Tejas Scouts recognition dinner occurs tonight at First Methodist Church in Cameron. Guest speaker is Dr. H. H. Brindley of Temple, Heart o' Texas Council Scout Commissioner, with Milam County Judge Don Humble serving as master of ceremonies. The Advancement Award goes to Troop 51 of Rosebud.

The Cameron Herald will publish Babson's Business and Financial Forecast for 1962 on December 28. The Babson Prediction claims an 83 percent accuracy and holds the highest record for annual forecasts on U S future business.

Miss Burke Crowned YHS All School Queen for 1961

The All School Carnival crowned Billie Burke a YHS junior as carnival queen after a day of events from 2 45 to 3 45 and 6 to 9 p m. Billie was escorted by Morris Morgan while Nancy Foster Ada Henderson queen was escorted by Eugene Wallace. Other candidates Patti Hightower Barbara Woodum and Kathy Schofield were escorted by students from various grades.

Last Rites Set For E. Villanueva

Funeral services for Estanislado Villanueva 71 will be held Sunday at 11:30 a m at Santisimo Sacramento Catholic Church in Cameron. Born in Mexico May 7 1890 he died Tuesday afternoon at Santa Fe Hospital in Temple. He was a Santa Fe Railroad section laborer for 45 years and active in the Woodman of the World Lodge and Mexican patriotic committee. He helped found the Hernandez Mexican Cemetery and was a Catholic Church finance committee member. Rosary will be recited 7:30 p m Saturday at Green Funeral Home. Burial will be in St Monica's Cemetery.

Cameron School Superintendent Touts District as Major Local Enterprise

Cameron School Superintendent Charles Zeigler told the Rotary Club the district functions as the largest Cameron business with a $556,309 annual budget excluding lunch and activities and 106 staff. He noted 24 percent of funding comes from local Texas sources while the district is valued at $8.7 million and serves 1627 students with 77 teachers, urging full community cooperation to provide educational opportunities and build community character.

Six YHS Seniors Vie For Alcoa Scholarship

Six Cameron seniors Dan Wesley Brashear Frances Marie Jackson Lanette Laffere Joyce Ann Terry Doris Ruth Trdy and Gwen dolyn Zawadzke plus Milano’s Linda Ray Cotten compete with 14 area students for a 2500 Alcoa Foundation Scholarship. Maxwell says 21 finalists will test January 13 at the University of Texas and the winner will be named next spring based on academics leadership and college entrance test results.

Eight thousand Milam County residents attended Cameron’s Friday parade featuring Santa the Christmas City and Yale Parade in Cen Tex. Top float winners were Ame Bethel Church Trinity Lutheran Church and Milam County 4 H Club. Santa handed out candy as police noted a large crowd.

Mistrial Declared In Summers vs Texas Employment

A mistrial was declared in the jury trial of O L Summers versus the Texas Employment Insurance Association in district court before Judge W C Wallace. Summers alleging $14035 in damages from a December 11 1958 accident in Milam County has the case reset for March 12 1962.
